41 mpg average since new; it now has 547k miles and I add about 1000 miles a week. A number of improvements for both performance and fuel economy. I like it so much that I bought another 2003 Golf TDI, this one with only 122k miles. Very nearly a perfect car.
Volkswagen TDIs are best for people who drive a lot of miles, and for those who might want to keep the same car for 10 years or more. Find a good independent VW mechanic and avoid dealerships after the warranty period.
