I picked up a fresh "just off the truck" GTI Autobahn a couple of weeks ago. I've owned a lot of cars, but this is, dollar for dollar, the best. Small (great for my parking garage) but expandable in the cargo department. DSG seems better than that on the CC I replaced. So far I haven't experienced any of the DSG "lag" that some complain about. Shifts are almost unnoticable.
The infotainment is flaky. But aren't they all? Sometimes the GPS gets confused, however I think that's a pretty common GPS problem. The Nav unit appears to be the same one as the Audi. "Fender" audio is OK, I guess. Back up camera and "parking assist" are interesting options. Probably not necessary on such a small car, but nice to have, anyway.
The 2.0 turbo is a great engine, making enough power for around town and for the Interstate, too. Acceleration is brisk. Handling is crisp and precise. So far I've left it in standard, non-sport mode.
Leather seats are firm and supportive. Doors have a solid feel. Keyless entry and ambient lighting are nice features, but to save money you may want to go with the basic model. Sunroof works, but in Florida the netting might not be as good as a solid cover. On the other hand, with the netting, you can open the roof and still have plenty of outside air filter in.
Overall, "Mexican" build quality seems comparable to the German VW/Audis I've owned previously.
A GTI is expensive when optioned out--about the price as a comparably optioned A3 1.8. But more fun to drive. Mine had a window sticker of 35K. Expect a modest discount--maybe. Probably too much $ for most Americans to spend on a smallish hatch. But if that is what you are looking for: small, sporty, fun to drive AND practical, the Golf GTI may be the ticket.
