Reviewed: 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

4dr Sedan turbocharged 90hp 1.9L I4 Diesel 5-speed manual FWD

Why the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta?

Interior styling

Nice red and blue backlights for controls at night time.

Fuel economy

With the diesel engine (1.9L, mechanical fuel injection) and manual transmission, deliver 50+ mpg in mixed driving. 56-59mpg on highway running 60-70mph.

Handling

Very crisp and responsive.

Safety & braking

Brake response is quick. Crumple zones saved my family from injury when the car was in a wreck.

Feature availability

The availability of seat heaters with cloth seats.

Why Not the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta?

Quietness

Again, the diesel engine contributes most to the lack of quietness. On the highway where the diesel is at lower RPM, wind noise is abundant.

Rear seat room & comfort

Seats are not comfortable and room in inadequate for anyone over 62 inches tall.

Materials & workmanship

Very flimsy components for the trunk release mechanism. The glove box is also made of flimsy material. Electrical problems have recently cropped up with the power windows.

Dealer practices

Dealers will tell you one price but then tack add-on charges that were not discussed. Had to walk away from the table several times before they agreed to the price that was initially quoted.
