Why the 2004 Volkswagen Passat?

Powertrain performance

The turbodiesel provides more than adequate power for merging onto freeways or climbing hills. The torque is such that there are no downshifts except on steep hills. The transmission can be manually shifted for optimum economy or performance.

Fuel economy

The freeway and mixed-driving fuel economy is high for a comfortable 5-passenger car, which compensates for the higher price of diesel fuel.

Materials & workmanship

The car is built solidly and has a firm, heavy feel to it. No rattles despite the car vibrations at idle from the diesel four-cylinder engine.

Handling

The car rides firmly but not harshly. The steering and braking are positive without being too aggressive.

Why Not the 2004 Volkswagen Passat?

Dealer practices

Replacement parts and routine maintenance items like motor oil are extraordinarily expensive. I try to avoid the dealership for routine maintenance. Others I know with Volkswagens report similar dissatisfaction with the dealership.
