Reviewed: 2001.5 Volkswagen Passat

4dr Wagon turbocharged 170hp 1.8L I4 5-speed manual FWD

Why the 2001.5 Volkswagen Passat?

Cargo capacity

Wagons make a lot of sense for families. I have two kids, and the size of the vehicle works well for our family of four and a large dog. Not too big and not too small.

Powertrain performance

We have the 1.8T and manual transmission. Manuals are hard to come by. The turbo four has enough power and gets good mileage.

Handling

Handles with confidence and rides well. We have Bilstien shocks which help a lot.

Rear seat room & comfort

For a while we had two child seats in the back. That can certainly be done in a smaller car, but the room of a midsize car is appreciated.

Why Not the 2001.5 Volkswagen Passat?

Dealer practices

Very high prices. The list of things they come up with to repair every time I take it in is amazing. I take the car to a good independent mechanic and keep it in good shape.

Depreciation

VWs depreciate like crazy. Plan to either buy used or buy new and keep for a long time.

We have a 2001 B5-generation Passat wagon, which shares the size and configuration of your B5.5. It is simply the best-sized, best-configured car ever offered in the American market, which is why we selected it and plan to keep it as long as we reasonably can. I am royally bummed out that it is so hard to find a non-SUV, non-minivan, sport sedan based wagon in this country. Our only hope for an eventual replacement is that the Jetta/Golf Sportwagen and the BMW 3-series wagon keep growing in size. In another model generation or two one or both should approach the size of our beloved B5/B5.5 generation Passat wagons.

Our 2001 has been only average, at best, in reliability, but my sons and I keep repair costs under control by doing much of our own work. (They drive a 2000 Audi S4 and a 2002 A4, and I have a 1996 A4, all of which have a similar platform to the B5-generation Passats.)
