Why the 2013 Volkswagen Tiguan?

Reliability & durability

Bought this car new seven years ago and it has been very reliable. Only dealer service was when new and completely covered by warranty. Since then, nothing but a dragging rear caliper that I believe is related to the electric parking brake. I just replace one of the four rear linings about every 20000 miles and everything is fine.

Powertrain performance

Performance is fine but the transmission calibration is pretty bad. The vehicle is overgeared and wants to find a tall gear to quickly. This necessitates frequent gear changing and torque converter unlocking to accommodate what is basically a flat road. Combination of six speeds with a loose torque converter provides the equivalent of 12 speed choices. Grade sensing software is abominable. Could be a lot nicer with tighter torque converter and numerically higher final drive ratio. Fortunately has a good Aisin transmission that hopefully can take all of this monkey business.

Interior styling

The fake leather interior is both comfortable and extremely durable (much better than leather). After seven years and 73000 miles a good cleaning makes it look exactly like new.

Reliability & durability

I bought this car new for my wife and after 7 years and 73000 miles she still loves the car. Reasonable level of refinement, small on the outside but big on the inside, easy to park and still looks great when its clean. Living in the rust belt, this vehicle is holding up very well compared to other cars this age. Great expectations and going to drive it till it drops.

Why Not the 2013 Volkswagen Tiguan?

Powertrain performance

Poor transmission calibration makes it necessary for me to manually shift the transmission to avoid annoying up/down shifts.
