Introduction

Since my 2013 positive review, my wife, whose car this is, was whacked by a texting driver in a big GMC. My wife saw the crash coming and was able to partially avoid, but still took about 35mph blow to front drivers quarter panel. It was simply amazing how the Volvo absorbed the impact and protected her and one of our dogs in the cabin: the only evidence was a couple of coins knocked out of the coin tray and the dog's kennel tipped on its side. We took to an excellent body shop who stripped everything damaged and showed me how the body had absorbed the impact with the crush zones. Damage included a couple of bent suspension parts, panels along the driver's side, the headlight assembly (Xenon, active bending, $1,000!) and the hood. All told, when beautifully and perfectly restored, the cost was over $16K, all covered by insurance of course. Bottom line: this showed both my wife and me why our faith in Volvo's engineering was very well-placed! GREAT VEHICLE!!

Why the 2012 Volvo XC60?

Powertrain performance

I had considered an XC60 in 2010 and 11, but thought they were less than fun. But the 2012 R-Design with the Polestar tune is spectacular! Really great pick up with the powertrain always feeling like you're not even pushing it.

Exterior styling

Distinctive and even elegant. Very eye-catching. Excellent lighting.

Interior styling

Very clean. Huge improvements over previous years with computer controls. Elegant seating. Very solid.

Quietness

Excellent, especially with the premium sound system.

Feature availability

The combination of comfort and unique safety features is superb.

Why Not the 2012 Volvo XC60?

Fuel economy

Not that great for a cross-over SUV, but it's a relatively heavy, solid vehicle with a 6-cylinder turbo, so it's not exactly a hybrid!

Price or payments

I don't think anyone would buy the R-Design with the Platinum package with the thought of saving a buck; but it's not as expensive as comparable offerings in this class. This is a very luxurious-feeling vehicle and interest rates are low enough...
