2006	The 4Runner's dated powertrain--its automatic transmission is down three gear ratios compared to the Jeep's--and brick-like aerodynamics aren't good for fuel economy. EPA ratings are just 17 city, 21 highway. The Jeep with its V6 engine does the same in city driving, but 3 mpg better on the highway. Plus you can get a diesel engine in the Jeep, and it rates 21/28. In real-world suburban driving, I managed to coax the 4Runner's trip computer average as high as 24.6, but high teens and low 20s were more typical. On the highway the trip computer reported 20.5, close to the EPA rating. see full Toyota 4Runner review

1999	0	Trying to improve MPG above 17 may not happen. The previous owner Beat this poor old 4Runner, only put in a new trans, which is now slipping ever-so-slightly (not low fluid). Had to put in new exhaust - all, and mass air flow sensor. Maybe that's to be expected at 150k miles, and maybe these problems are more due to owner neglect. Altho I obtained this vehicle as part of a package deal (together with the mobile home I bought), I really wanted to love this truck, but during these firstfew months, so far it's not making me very happy, and I love to drive! 2013	The Avalon's EPA ratings of 21 mpg city, 31 mpg highway are the best of any V6-powered large sedan. The Azera's numbers aren't too far behind (20/29). The LaCrosse's are (17/27). In our suburban driving we roughly matched the city figure. On the highway, though, we measured about 27. A number of factors might explain the shortfall. With a 70 mph limit, we were cruising well above the maximum speed of the EPA test cycle. Also, every seat was occupied and the trunk was chock full of luggage. Desire better fuel economy? Well, for the first time the Avalon is also available with a hybrid powertrain, specifically the same 200-horsepower (combined) unit available in the Camry. With this engine, the EPA ratings are 40/39. But you'll give up the more effortless acceleration and sweeter sound of the 268-horsepower V6. While the 3.5-liter V6 has changed very little since its introduction in the 2006 Avalon, and lacks the latest technology such as direct injection, it feels plenty strong and is among the best-sounding V6s. At low speeds and in turns traction is the limiting factor. All-wheel-drive would help, but unlike in the Buick isn't an option. The transmission remains the same six-speed automatic Toyota has offered since 2007. It's smooth and responsive, especially in sport mode (offered with the XLE Touring and Limited). If you desire to call the shifts yourself anyway, this can be done via either paddles flanking the steering wheel or the lever. Econ mode makes top mpg easier to attain by dulling throttle responses and quickening upshifts. see full Toyota Avalon review
