2006	The 4Runner's dated powertrain--its automatic transmission is down three gear ratios compared to the Jeep's--and brick-like aerodynamics aren't good for fuel economy. EPA ratings are just 17 city, 21 highway. The Jeep with its V6 engine does the same in city driving, but 3 mpg better on the highway. Plus you can get a diesel engine in the Jeep, and it rates 21/28. In real-world suburban driving, I managed to coax the 4Runner's trip computer average as high as 24.6, but high teens and low 20s were more typical. On the highway the trip computer reported 20.5, close to the EPA rating. see full Toyota 4Runner review

1999	0	Trying to improve MPG above 17 may not happen. The previous owner Beat this poor old 4Runner, only put in a new trans, which is now slipping ever-so-slightly (not low fluid). Had to put in new exhaust - all, and mass air flow sensor. Maybe that's to be expected at 150k miles, and maybe these problems are more due to owner neglect. Altho I obtained this vehicle as part of a package deal (together with the mobile home I bought), I really wanted to love this truck, but during these firstfew months, so far it's not making me very happy, and I love to drive! 2014	Those seeking to maximize fuel economy should check out the Corolla LE Eco, with EPA ratings for 30 mpg city, 42 highway. The regular LE checks in at 29/38, and the S at 29/37. Even the last is within spitting distance of the best in the segment, including the 30/39 Sentra. In my efficiency-minded suburban driving the trip computer reported an average of 37.7, a bit better than the 36I managed with the Sentra. Driving with less care for fuel economy netted 32, about even with the Nissan. The Toyota couldn't quite match the Nissanona 65-mph highway drive, though, with a two-way trip computer average of 38 vs. 40 (quite close to those EPA estimates). see full Toyota Corolla review

2007	4dr Sedan 126-horsepower 1.8L I4 4-speed automatic FWD	This car gets 25 City, 35 Highway. It looks like it should be able to do better, but it does not. The 3-speed Automatic with Overdrive (4-speed in reality) is dated and is only okay with the engine's performance. The engine itself, the 1ZZFE, has very few flaws, but is the final evolution of a 90's engine design, that gets okay horsepower, but goes through gas more than it should. And when they get older, they do go through more gas than they should. In addition, the engine can't handle E10 in cold weather (regular gasoline with "up to" 10 percent ethanol) without problems, requiring you to spend more on "REC" fuel, which is non-ethanol pure gasoline. On top of that, the drive by wire throttle has a noticeable delay between the hair trigger throttle and the engine surging forward, making smooth starts with the automatic difficult. see full Toyota Corolla review
