138-horsepower 2.0L I4 5-speed manual FWD
88000 mi | ESC turns off randomly, or after too much turning, often at slow speeds on back or side roads |
34720 mi | Defective brake switch affecting ESC and rear brake lights activation was replaced under a safety recall at the dealer in under 45 minutes. |
90520 mi | Hyundai Canada refuses to replace the faulty ESC (Electronic Stability Control) module, which is also linked to the electrically assisted steering, and has been a subject of a Recall on Elantra models (although curiously, mine does not seem to qualify for some arcane reason) such as the Touring. When starting the vehicle, or even while actively driving, the ESC (identified by a yellow warning light in the gauge cluster) disengages , resulting in sudden loss of steering assistance (which could easily result in a crash by unsuspecting drivers). My ESC would do this, and restarting the vehicle would usually reset it. However, this step no longer worked for me at the time of the airbag recall. This issue first manifested itself in 2012, but didn’t return until just before the expiration of my 5-year warranty, at which point the dealer reflashed or reprogrammed the part. I reported the problem to Hyundai Canada, but was refused an out-of-warranty repair or replacement, even though I provided them with a link to a recall article (clearly identifying the models affected by the recall) for this very problem published by Global News. The light was permanently on, and steering effort increased dramatically for that period of time between the issue’s re-manifestation and the recall servicing of the airbag. Upon picking up the vehicle from the Hyundai dealer after the airbag recall replacement/repair, I noticed that the ESC warning light was off, and that the steering effort was back to normal. As this issue re-manifested itself yet once more last month (I reset it by switching off the car and starting it back up), I can only assume that the Hyundai dealer re-flashed the unit. This was not mentioned in the copy of the recall repair report given to me by the dealer upon picking up my car. |
31040 mi | Car is parked outside and on very cold days, the parking brake warning light stays on even when the brake is released. The brake isn't actually catching but the handle is not going down all the way. After about 5K, light goes off. |
35500 mi | Upon release, parking brake lever did not go all the way down, causing brake light to remain on. However, did not effect actual braking. Dealer did repairs but brake light still comes on when lever released. |
29760 mi | Link broken on both front wheel. |
43400 mi | Parking brake handle was pulling up too far, parking brake was ineffective. Disassembled and greased all parts. |
50406 mi C $250 |
Front rotors delaminated and needed replacing. Pads / rotors were replaced. |
23000 mi | Brake switch malfunction caused the stability control 'Off' light to remain constantly illuminated even though the ESC was not disabled. Switched replaced and problem has not returned. |
