The valve stem broke while filling the tire in bitter cold. Dealer insists there must have been some other damage done to it to break it. They were the last to have the wheel off but it had been a few months since so they claimed no fault. 
12500 mi Gas cover had a defect with the pivoting mechanism, dealer added a kind of rubber shim to increase the spring effect. They told us about a recall to repair this.
