May 2015 | One front seat was scratched at the back. And then it was discovered that neither front seat heater worked, and has to be replaced (not yet done, awaiting parts). Steering wheel makes a faint but noticeable creaking noise when turned at parking speeds. Repair attempted, partly helped, but noise is still there. Will wait to see if it gets worse before re-submitting for repair.
Aug 2015 4700 mi |
Seat back replaced due to scratch. Heated seats still not heating properly. Seat heaters (one of a handful of components outsourced (from a company in Australia)) apparently aren't designed properly, plus service folks misdiagnosed the problem initially. Noticed a small amount of water drop from the panoramic roof after high pressure washing (at a coin-operated car wash). This happened twice. Didn't bother to repair it since I don't frequently use high pressure car washes. Car would stop charging intermittently, usually restarting charging on its own. Often it would cycle on and off multiple times within an hour. Occasionally the charge handle seemed to make a poor connection (it would charge when pushing down on it, letting go would cause it to stop charging). Replaced trident cable (low voltage data cable between charge port and onboard charger). This significantly reduced the intermittent charging problem, but didn't completely eliminate it. Tesla accessory "drop-in center console" (a.k.a. "premium center console") storage door was stuck closed. They cleaned and lubricated the door slider. The door opens properly now, but it requires a lot of force to open. Rear drive unit was making the well-known "milling" noise (spaceship sound) due to an internal bearing that isn't properly affixed. Not a reliability problem, just annoying. Replaced drive unit with rebuilt unit. Front trunk/hood would always pop up when the release was commanded, but sometimes couldn't be lifted. You'd have to command it to release again at the same time as you pushed or pulled the partially-open hood. Replaced both hood latches. Velcro patches fell off of the original equipment floor mats, so they no longer stuck to the retainers and started bunching up. Replaced with newer design floor mats. Steering rack made a click or pop noise when the steering wheel was turned near the end of its travel at very low speeds or when the car was stopped. Installed friction shims between steering rack and front subframe. Lug nuts were distorted from normal use (impact wrench), making it hard to slide a socket over them. Replaced all lug nuts with improved parts. Brake pedal squeaks when pressed. Electromechanical brake booster needs to be replaced, but needs to be ordered.
Apr 2018 37600 mi |
Car would sometimes randomly stop charging, and usually immediately restart on its own, sometimes several times in a row (only when using the mobile connector). They previously replaced the trident cable (low voltage harness from charger to charge port), which reduced this, but didn't fix it completely. Also, the mobile connector charge handle got stuck in the charge port and couldn't be removed (the charge port wouldn't unlock the handle). I called technical support and they walked me through some tricks that eventually got it released. They checked the vehicle logs remotely and replaced the mobile connector. Works fine now, and the random charging failures are completely gone too.
Aug 2018 48466 mi |
Occasional small water leak from right front of panoramic roof. Replaced main seal, resealed "front piece", cleaned sunroof drains, lubricated and cleaned moving parts. Low volume synthetic/artificial static noises, seemingly from the left front tweeter(s) when audio is off. It happens on 1 drive out of 50 or 100. Service center was unable to duplicate. Brake booster squeaks when brake pedal is pressed or released. A different location wanted to replace the booster and didn't repair it at that time because they didn't have a booster in stock, but I knew that it could be fixed by just flushing the brake fluid. I moved and told this new location to do that instead, which they did, and it solved the problem. Panoramic roof sometimes does not open. The roof tilts up but gets stuck and doesn't slide back. You have to close the roof, then open it while pushing up on the glass to force it up enough to start sliding. Replaced seal-stop bumper.
Sep 2018 49200 mi |
After panoramic roof water leak was repaired, I left the car outside in a severe thunderstorm to make sure it was fully dry. There was significant water leakage at the left rear corner of the panoramic roof and C-pillar, and the headliner had several stains indicating previous leakage around this area. There was also water in the liftgate shell, which was dripping out of the liftgate trim panel. Service center found water coming from the rear quarter glass. Replaced rear quarter glass and brightwork, and removed the drain plugs from the liftgate shell. The brightwork and quarter glass had been replaced several times in the past before I bought the car used; it is very likely that it caused by a previous repair.
Oct 2019 72124 mi US $2365 |
eMMC failure in the media control unit (touchscreen). Known issue for Model S built before ~2018. Touchscreen would randomly not power up. Pulling the fuse for the touchscreen got it working again a few times over the course of a week, then eventually the touchscreen stayed off. At that point the car was drivable but it couldn't be charged and there was no HVAC. Media control unit (MCU) replaced with remanufactured part. Left rear door outer handle would not present (pop out). Could hear the door handle motor running continuously. The paddle gear had broken. Technician replaced paddle gear.
Nov 2019 78000 mi |
Navigation showed error message: "Navigation unavailable. Navigation maps are not loaded." You could see the map and find a business/point of interest but not navigate to it. Mobile technician said that the car had started to download a new map file in the background over Wi-Fi but the car had been moved out of Wi-Fi range before the download was complete and has not connected to Wi-Fi for a while, so the download had failed permanently. Old map data was erased when the new maps started downloading. The car had to be moved near a strong Wi-Fi network and then I had to call the technician to have her remotely force the car to start the download again. After a few hours of downloading, the problem was fixed.
Feb 2020 80000 mi |
There was a notification that maps had been updated, but also an error: "Navigation unavailable. Navigation maps are not loaded." The icon next it showed MCU_w007, which is an internal fault code. I had the same problem before; maps can be seen and location lookups work, but navigation is not functional. I scheduled mobile service with the app. The night before they were supposed to come out, I was driving and noticed that the location text at the bottom of the map was again showing the current road and correct city (indicating that the navigation was working properly again), so I cancelled the appointment. My guess is that someone remotely fixed something, but I didn't get any communication from Tesla to confirm it and wouldn't have even noticed that it was fixed if I hadn't been driving the car the night before the appointment.

This repair was funded under warranty. Digital aspects of the vehicle were not functioning, including the big Tesla screen. The car could still be driven, but it was far from ideal. I was also having difficulty charging the car at level 2 (it started and stopped a lot). The service center diagnosed a problem with a chip relating to the MCU (master control unit?) and did some replacement of a daughter board.

This was funded under warranty. There was a noise in the A/C. Some issue with a louver was found and repaired. (Otherwise, a few other things on this trip were checked and came out fine. I also paid for two new tires, but I did not include those as part of this report, as this doesn't seem like a repair.)
Nov 2021 74419 mi US $52 |
The only pay item for this trip was a cracked key fob housing that needed replacement. This was all done under warranty. The main repair item was replacing a valve system on the coolant. This was due to a coolant low warning on the dashboard. I was told the issue was found to be pretty extensive, and could have been a problem, such as to the battery health (the coolant is used to keep the battery itself cool I guess), if it had not been repaired. I was glad they caught this.

Lug Nuts on all four tires required replacing and proper torque. During tire replacement over the preceding months (more than $300 per tire), one of the shops had mentioned to me that the vehicle had "swollen lug nuts". I took the vehicle back to Tesla and they performed the replacement at a fee for the parts and labor. |
