There had been a few yellow warning messages indicting a charging or electrical problem, perhaps affecting the 12v system or air suspension, which could make the car not start. Then when it didn't start, I called Tesla. They had the car trailered in to Boston (100 miles) where they after a weekend of sitting idle, they could start the car and couldn't replicate the failures. Two weeks later at a Supercharger, car would not start again. Photographed warning lights this time, which enabled them to diagnose the problem. Replaced 3rd Gen charger on refresh Model S due to CHG alerts present when Supercharging. This was causing the Car Needs Service alert to appear.

RF outside door handle was intermittently malfunctioning. When it failed, the door handle would present but pulling on the handle would not open the door. Tesla sent a mobile technician to my home. He replaced the door handle, for which I was charged $303. I was only charged for parts and not for labor or for the service visit, and the handle was working correctly when the tech left, about an hour after he arrived.
Jun 2021 34000 mi |
The RF outside door handle that was replaced on 5/5/21 was again failing intermittently. In addition, the LF outside door handle was malfunctioning nearly 100% of the time. The problem with the LF handle was that when the door was unlocked, the door would immediately pop open, and when the door was closed, it would not latch and stay closed. A different mobile technician was sent to my home. He said that the RF handle had not been properly adjusted when it was installed on 5/5, a problem that he seems to have fixed. Unfortunately, in the process, he got the RF door glass out of alignment, causing wind noise on that side of the car, something that went unnoticed until after the technician had left. The technician then attempted to install an updated outside door handle on the driver’s side. After installation, he could not get the handle to “communicate” with the car. As a result, the LF outside door handle would not “present” so that door would not open from the outside at all. The technician called in another tech to assist him with uploading new firmware, but they were unable to do so. Their diagnosis was that the new part was faulty. I was not charged anything for this service visit, which lasted about 3 hours.
Aug 2021 35000 mi US $300 |
Tesla notified me that the repairs that my car needed were too complicated or required too much equipment to be handled by a mobile technician and that I would have to bring the car to the service center. July 20 – 5 weeks after the unsuccessful repair attempt – was the soonest appointment that I could get. They removed the RF door panel, adjusted the outside door handle and door glass, and seemed to fix the wind noise problem from 6/14. That door handle now seems to work properly. Upon disassembling the LF door, they decided that it needed a wiring harness, which they did not have in stock. It arrived within a couple of business days and was installed. Afterwards, Tesla said that they wanted to install “one more part,” again one that was not in stock locally. A couple of business days later, an updated control module arrived and was installed. Problems persisted, though, as they say that they had difficulty uploading firmware again (all of which makes me believe that the wiring harness really wasn’t defective at all.) On Thursday 8/5/21, after 17 days at the service center, my car was finally returned to me. Currently, everything seems to be working correctly. Initially, I was told that the repair would take 1 – 2 days, and I was given $200 in Uber credits for transportation. When it became apparent that the repairs would take a while, on Friday 7/23, I was given a loaner car to drive. The only charges for this visit were a total of roughly $300 for the wiring harness and the labor to install it. As a side note, I would like to point out that when I got my car back on 8/5, the interior – particularly the tan leather on the seats – was extremely dirty.

Noticed a small amount of water drop from the panoramic roof after high pressure washing (at a coin-operated car wash). This happened twice. Didn't bother to repair it since I don't frequently use high pressure car washes. Car would stop charging intermittently, usually restarting charging on its own. Often it would cycle on and off multiple times within an hour. Occasionally the charge handle seemed to make a poor connection (it would charge when pushing down on it, letting go would cause it to stop charging). Replaced trident cable (low voltage data cable between charge port and onboard charger). This significantly reduced the intermittent charging problem, but didn't completely eliminate it. Tesla accessory "drop-in center console" (a.k.a. "premium center console") storage door was stuck closed. They cleaned and lubricated the door slider. The door opens properly now, but it requires a lot of force to open. Rear drive unit was making the well-known "milling" noise (spaceship sound) due to an internal bearing that isn't properly affixed. Not a reliability problem, just annoying. Replaced drive unit with rebuilt unit. Front trunk/hood would always pop up when the release was commanded, but sometimes couldn't be lifted. You'd have to command it to release again at the same time as you pushed or pulled the partially-open hood. Replaced both hood latches. Velcro patches fell off of the original equipment floor mats, so they no longer stuck to the retainers and started bunching up. Replaced with newer design floor mats. Steering rack made a click or pop noise when the steering wheel was turned near the end of its travel at very low speeds or when the car was stopped. Installed friction shims between steering rack and front subframe. Lug nuts were distorted from normal use (impact wrench), making it hard to slide a socket over them. Replaced all lug nuts with improved parts. Brake pedal squeaks when pressed. Electromechanical brake booster needs to be replaced, but needs to be ordered.

Car would sometimes randomly stop charging, and usually immediately restart on its own, sometimes several times in a row (only when using the mobile connector). They previously replaced the trident cable (low voltage harness from charger to charge port), which reduced this, but didn't fix it completely. Also, the mobile connector charge handle got stuck in the charge port and couldn't be removed (the charge port wouldn't unlock the handle). I called technical support and they walked me through some tricks that eventually got it released. They checked the vehicle logs remotely and replaced the mobile connector. Works fine now, and the random charging failures are completely gone too.

Occasional small water leak from right front of panoramic roof. Replaced main seal, resealed "front piece", cleaned sunroof drains, lubricated and cleaned moving parts. Low volume synthetic/artificial static noises, seemingly from the left front tweeter(s) when audio is off. It happens on 1 drive out of 50 or 100. Service center was unable to duplicate. Brake booster squeaks when brake pedal is pressed or released. A different location wanted to replace the booster and didn't repair it at that time because they didn't have a booster in stock, but I knew that it could be fixed by just flushing the brake fluid. I moved and told this new location to do that instead, which they did, and it solved the problem. Panoramic roof sometimes does not open. The roof tilts up but gets stuck and doesn't slide back. You have to close the roof, then open it while pushing up on the glass to force it up enough to start sliding. Replaced seal-stop bumper.
Sep 2018 49200 mi |
After panoramic roof water leak was repaired, I left the car outside in a severe thunderstorm to make sure it was fully dry. There was significant water leakage at the left rear corner of the panoramic roof and C-pillar, and the headliner had several stains indicating previous leakage around this area. There was also water in the liftgate shell, which was dripping out of the liftgate trim panel. Service center found water coming from the rear quarter glass. Replaced rear quarter glass and brightwork, and removed the drain plugs from the liftgate shell. The brightwork and quarter glass had been replaced several times in the past before I bought the car used; it is very likely that it caused by a previous repair.

eMMC failure in the media control unit (touchscreen). Known issue for Model S built before ~2018. Touchscreen would randomly not power up. Pulling the fuse for the touchscreen got it working again a few times over the course of a week, then eventually the touchscreen stayed off. At that point the car was drivable but it couldn't be charged and there was no HVAC. Media control unit (MCU) replaced with remanufactured part. Left rear door outer handle would not present (pop out). Could hear the door handle motor running continuously. The paddle gear had broken. Technician replaced paddle gear.

Navigation showed error message: "Navigation unavailable. Navigation maps are not loaded." You could see the map and find a business/point of interest but not navigate to it. Mobile technician said that the car had started to download a new map file in the background over Wi-Fi but the car had been moved out of Wi-Fi range before the download was complete and has not connected to Wi-Fi for a while, so the download had failed permanently. Old map data was erased when the new maps started downloading. The car had to be moved near a strong Wi-Fi network and then I had to call the technician to have her remotely force the car to start the download again. After a few hours of downloading, the problem was fixed.
Feb 2020 80000 mi |
There was a notification that maps had been updated, but also an error: "Navigation unavailable. Navigation maps are not loaded." The icon next it showed MCU_w007, which is an internal fault code. I had the same problem before; maps can be seen and location lookups work, but navigation is not functional. I scheduled mobile service with the app. The night before they were supposed to come out, I was driving and noticed that the location text at the bottom of the map was again showing the current road and correct city (indicating that the navigation was working properly again), so I cancelled the appointment. My guess is that someone remotely fixed something, but I didn't get any communication from Tesla to confirm it and wouldn't have even noticed that it was fixed if I hadn't been driving the car the night before the appointment.

This was funded under warranty. There was a noise in the A/C. Some issue with a louver was found and repaired. (Otherwise, a few other things on this trip were checked and came out fine. Nov 2021 74419 mi US $52 |
The only pay item for this trip was a cracked key fob housing that needed replacement. This was all done under warranty. The main repair item was replacing a valve system on the coolant. This was due to a coolant low warning on the dashboard. I was told the issue was found to be pretty extensive, and could have been a problem, such as to the battery health (the coolant is used to keep the battery itself cool I guess), if it had not been repaired. I was glad they caught this.

Instrument panel failed--a known problem. Screen begins to come apart, with "bubbles" emerging to obscure the display. Had to pay Tesla $1300 to install a refurbished part! Rear parking sensor fell into the bumper, because the glue (!) holding it in from the factory failed. Tesla charged $105.00 to re-glue the sensor in place. Process took more than 7 hours, because software continued to fail and car was immobilized. |

Car wouldn't start or release charge cable — dead in garage. Car was transported to service center for diagnosis and repairs. Problem was a corroded wire to the charge port. Tesla service said it took nine hours to find the problem but they comped me all but one hour. My car is long out of warranty (except for the battery and drive unit). Service also paid for a rental car to get me to the service center to pick up my car.

No power brake, occurred twice after a day with snow melting and the next day it was frozen. I could brake but I had to press hard. The issue disappeared by itself after some time, but I didn't want to take any chance so I sent the car to the service center on the second occurrence. They tried to reproduce the issue without success. They did some performance test of the vacuum pump with their equipment and saw some incorrect voltage readings, so they replaced it. They suspect that moisture was inside the pump. Replaced trunk drain plugs with new model. Parking brake warning light. Replaced left parking brake caliper assembly.

Had a "Low coolant" message in the car occasionally, getting more often each day. 2 days ago I saw liquid under the car, took pictures and sent to mobile service team which was supposed to come a week later. They told me to go to the service center ASAP, which I did. They found leak from the 4 Way Coolan Valve - Series/Parallel. They replaced it, it was quick work. Charge cable didn't work with 110v or 220v. Replaced universal mobile connector.

Cracking when over speed bumps at low speed. Tesla replaced suspension control arms and sway bar. I also asked to check for a possible cooling fluid leak, but they did not find anything. The problem came back once after this trip but nothing afterward. The leak was in the middle of the car, so it was possibly an overflow as this is where it goes. I also asked for a knocking when going from forward to reverse and reverse to forward as I was getting close to the end of the warranty, they did not hear it, but it's still there. I assume it's a normal wear and will not break soon.

Corrosion on drive side ground connection (5 cables on that ground), under the frunk. Caused occasional loosing of power steering, ABS, stability control, power brake, going to neutral, Christmas tree error messages. Unscrew the nut, but the aluminum stud broke. Decided to bring the ground connection elsewhere near the wheel using a 4 gauge cable from an auto shop near my house. Cable cost 18 CAD$, dielectric grease cost 8$. Drilled the aluminum plate and tightened hard the cable with a bolt and nut I had. Problem gone.

Passenger parking brake was having issue in the last weeks. Driver side parking brake was replaced 2 years ago under warranty. I removed the parking brake and the motor started to work normally again, I put it back in place and it worked for 2 weeks but issue came back. I decided to buy a used parking brake from a shop not that far from here, but it was not the correct side. I spent time because I thought I would be able to take components from the original brake to make it work, but in the end, even if the driver and passenger parking brake were not exactly the same, it mechanically fit, so I just assembled everything back in place with the newer parking brake and it's been flawless since then. |

Rear hatch squeaks/rattles when going over bumps. Adjusted the bump stop height. Modest improvement, but the problem is still there. Rattle/vibration from behind the dashboard, seemingly related to the air ducts / ventilation system. Repair made it rattle/vibrate less, but the problem still persists. Windshield wipers "clicked" when operating. This problem was fixed in 2015 and came back in late 2016. Now it's fixed again.

Battery pack failed, reporting 0 charge when it was nearly full. Tesla towed the car to their shop and sent us home in an Uber. The battery pack was replaced with a loaner pack while ours is headed to California for repairs. After previous attempt, hatchback was still rattling. Retaining clips now insulated and latch lubricated. We'll see. Right rear window regulator was "detecting false objects" and automatically going down. Replaced regulator assembly.

Tesla has a "charger" in the car which converts 240VAC from the power mains to DC for charging the battery. Mine failed. Tesla diagnosed this remotely and said it was safe to drive the car to the shop. The charger was replaced under warranty. Yet another attempt at fixing the rattling noise in our dashboard. Despite giving them video, they were "unable to reproduce it."
Dec 2017 37000 mi |
Our original battery, shipped to the factory after a defect, finally returned home and was reinstalled in the car. Curiously, the "loaner" battery gave 2.5% more range at the same charge level. The continuing saga of weird noises coming from our HVAC system was finally isolated to the doors that change airflow to different vents. They were vibrating. Totally replaced. Also, bits of foam insulation tape were coming out of the air vents. This turned out to be an unrelated issue, but they disassembled and reassembled the dashboard to fix this as well. Tire pressure monitoring system had dead batteries in three wheels. The fix was apparently to upgrade all four wheels to a completely new TPMS that now reports the pressure for each wheel, versus the original that would only report good/bad status.

The drive unit (motor) was making a "milling" noise, commonly attributed to bearings wearing down. Also, there was some play in the connector from motor to drive shaft resulting in clunking noises. The motor was replaced with a remanufactured unit under warranty. Noise in the HVAC system. Replaced some internal part. (This has been a recurring issue on this car.) No heat. A fourth drive unit was swapped mere days before full warranty expiry. Took considerable escalation with Tesla to get them to commit to it, but they eventually did. The "milling noise" associated with bearing wear had become increasingly severe, and while Tesla service centers repeatedly dismissed it as a non-issue, I later learned that not only was this a known problem, but they even had dB thresholds of noise that would trigger repair. This is quite a change from proactive swapping they did early in the life of the car. |

The original battery Rev-A had the High Voltage Contactor fail. The battery was swapped with a Refurbished Rev - A. Tesla service was fantastic. Tesla trailered a Model S loaner car to my home (80 miles from service center) and returned my car as well.
Jul 2014 50800 mi |
The replacement battery started exhibiting strange behavior after about 4 weeks (reduced range and charging failures). Tesla determined one of the cell groups was significantly unbalanced. Tesla swapped the battery with a much newer Rev - D battery. The Drive train (motor/inverter/gearbox) was swapped for a new unit at the request of TESLA engineering due to gearbox noises. My understanding is TESLA swaps the full unit so engineering can analyze the failure or early units to determine the root cause. |
