Acura ILX Real Gas Mileage: Pros
YearComment
2016 High-revving largish fours aren't the fashionable route to fuel efficiency. But the 201-horsepower 2.4-liter engine when mated to an eight-speed dual clutch automated manual transmission (DCT) returns EPA ratings of 25 mpg city, 36 mpg highway--better than the 2013-2015 ILX managed with a 150-horsepower 2.0-liter engine. The Audi with its au courant 180-horsepower turbocharged 1.8-liter checks in a little lower, with 23/33. But the Acura isn't quite best-in-class. The Mercedes-Benz CLA250 manages 26/38. Notably, both the Audi and the Mercedes also have DCTs, though with "only" six and seven speeds, respectively. Then there are hybrids and diesels. The ILX used to be available as a hybrid. But the ILX Hybrid's fuel economy wasn't stellar (39/38) and its performance was so uncompetitive even compared to the Prius-based Lexus CT 200h (43/40) that Acura killed it after just two model years. The Audi A3 TDI, the segment's lone entrant with a diesel, rates 31/43. For a combination of performance and fuel economy, it's hard to beat. Except that as I write this Audi dealers can't sell them, pending an investigation into whether they violate EPA regulations. A final note on fuel economy: the TLX's EPA figures are only a single mpg lower than the ILX's. see full Acura ILX review

Why doesn't Acura offer the larger four-cylinder engine with an automatic transmission? Likely because its fuel economy is already iffy with the stick. The EPA ratings are 22 MPG city, 31 highway. One benefit of turbochargers is that they enable lower rpm shifts and taller gearing. A Jetta GLI matches the Acura in the city, and does a couple MPG better on the highway. Not bad, but you'll find some much more powerful, much larger cars that score better than either of them. see full Acura ILX review

2011 4dr SUV turbocharged 150hp 2.2L I4 Diesel

Diesel economy is my only disappointment. Advertised 7L/100km, gets 8.2L/100km best ever, usually ~9.1L/100km. That's: 40mpg IMP or 33mpg US advertised, actual is 34mpgIMP/29mpgUS best, 31mpgIMP/26mpgUS worst see full Land Rover Freelander review
2008 4dr SUV turbocharged 160hp 2.2L I4 Diesel
6-speed manual AWD
I ran this car for 86,000 and it returned an average of 38.94 (imp) MPG whihc is about 10 MPG better than the Discovery Td5 that it replaced - one of my objectives given the fuel price rises in UK in 2008 see full Land Rover Freelander review

2004 4dr SUV 174-horsepower 2.5L V6

Fuel thirsty which is understandable given its weight, the smallish underpowered engine (for this model) and the full time 4wd. see full Land Rover Freelander review

It is like drink water. Not good on highway, worse in the city. see full Land Rover Freelander review
