2016 Weight is the enemy of fuel economy. Partly be reducing the Cruze's curb weight by about 250 pounds, from among the heaviest in the class to among the lightest, Chevrolet improved its EPA ratings from 26 mpg city, 38 mpg highway to 30/42 (30/40 in the tested top-of-the-line trim). The Honda Civic does a little better, 31/42, and the Mazda3 scores nearly as well, 30/41. But all three are close enough to consider them the segment's fuel economy leaders. The Ford Focus scores as high as 30/42, but only when equipped with a turbocharged three-cylinder engine and a manual transmission. For 2017 Chevrolet will offer a new 1.6-liter diesel that should deliver outstanding fuel economy. And if you want to avoid fossil fuels entirely, they already offer the related second-generation Volt, which can travel about 50 miles on electricity before a gasoline-powered backup engine kicks on. see full Chevrolet Cruze review

People with any clue how to drive rationally can achieve 42 mpg with little effort in rural highway and highway driving. Most people don?t realize going 10 mph over the speed limit really doesn?t save you any time on a 10 mile trip. Keep your pedal off the metal and the green in your wallet. Engine braking in the manuals is another big gain. Dfco saves a lot of gas. Rather than coasting down to your stop sign and burning your brakes up downshift as you slow and dont burn any fuel Other than a little blip between shifts. In casual suburban driving the trip computer reported between 22 and 23 mpg, splitting the difference between the EPA ratings of 19 city and 26 highway. When I made the engine sing mpg dropped into the high teens. Slip into Eco and drive the GS like a Prius, and 25 is barely doable. Not bad for a 306-horsepower, two-ton, all-wheel-drive sedan. But the torquier Audi A6 3.0T and BMW 535i xDrive do a little better, especially on the highway. The Teuton's turbos help a little here, but most of the blame/credit goes to their respective transmissions. If and when Lexus fits the GS AWD with the eight-speed automatic already offered in the RWD car, it'll likely catch up. see full Lexus GS review
