35000 mi TSB 14-0197 transmission shudder
52300 mi When transmission was rebuilt prior to my ownership dealer installation spring tabs were left on the clutch actuators. They were ground up inside clutch and affected shifting of the car. New clutch assembly & input shaft seals installed n/c.
This was a reprogramming Ford was doing of the transmission, antilock brakes and engine control module (I think). It improved transmission performance.
1300 mi When the car was new, a soft pedal start was jerky. It was only smooth if I had a normal amount of pressure or floored it. They said the computer chip needed to learn my driving style. It did learn me perfectly in 6 weeks. Smooth now.
5000 mi The trans. has been jerky and clunky since the beginning. Gave the car time to "learn" and then asked for help. They did the recommended computer updates and we are now in the same boat. "Learned" again, but not good.
11000 mi Same horrible lurching or hesitation you never know. Still horrible shifting. The car has been in the shop for hesitation, grinding, rough shifts, and driving forward when in reverse. Ford says its performing to specs and can't duplicate the issue even though they keep updating software, etc. Same stuff. Horrible shifting experiences.

53000 mi Transmission control module failed, fully covered by extended warranty for this issue based on recall notice

43000 mi The transmission stopped powering the vehicle in the middle of an intersection after stopping. It took multiple key cycles to get the vehicle to shift into gear. Transmission Control Module (TCM) was replaced.
85000 mi It was a recall and I was experiencing the symptoms. Updated transmission software.
17980 mi Transmission had to be re programed and works great now as well as the MYFORD had a upgrade
101000 mi

US $800
The car had shifting issues, so they had to replace some internal parts.
34100 mi Dealer noticed earlier that car shuddered when accelerating forcefully. Said that the clutch was faulty. They replaced the clutch under warranty for free. Transmission behaviour improved massively with the new clutch.
22000 mi Transmission failure from stop into intersection vehicle automatically dropped into neutral (causing engine to rev, subsequently catching it thrusted forward and this repeated twice in about 30 seconds. Same problem as before; car "slipping" out of gear and then catching creating a deceleration followed by a lurch; repeated again 2 times all within 30 seconds.
79600 mi

US $650
Have a loud grinding/whirring noise coming from front end. Thought it was wheel bearings. Dealer said it was the carrier bearing. That was replaced along with the halfshaft and axle nut.
83000 mi TCM failed (a known issue with an extended warranty) while driving, dealer replaced under warranty
142000 mi

US $2200
Replaced TCM, shift forks, shift fork actuator, and clutch packs.
56800 mi Transmission shifts into neutral while driving on a flat road at moderate speed. Ford attempted power train computer reflash [failed] followed by replacing transmission control module [computer & actuators]
49000 mi Hard, jerky shifts. New clutch needed for dual clutch transmission. Currently on order
50200 mi Hard Jerky shifts, transmission replaced
16000 mi Transmission shifts into neutral while at highway speeds and in turns. Car bought back.
9920 mi Check engine light came on and brought to dealer because auto transmission was shifting rough. They had to do another reflash of the PCM with a newer update than the one they did in February.
45000 mi At low speeds transmission lets the engine lug at low rpm before downshifting, causing noise and vibration. Dealership inspected transmission and revised settings (presumably software). Seems improved but only driven a few miles since.
30000 mi leak replaced ALL clutches
recall-car rolled down hill when foot was removed from brake. Tranmission was slow to react. they re programmed the computer in car.
6000 mi Transmission System Software Update
8000 mi Car was shuddering during acceleration at around 20 mph. Clutch assembly replaced.
19300 mi Transmission Stutters during acceleration. Transmission software reset. Problem recurred shortly thereafter.
25000 mi Replace clutch assembly for damage from leaking seals causing transmission to stutter during acceleration. Wheel disconnected from car @ CV Joint and axel rod.
4000 mi Customer satisfaction letter dated May 2012 offered reflashing of body control module, transmission module and ABS module to correct driveability concerns.

2012 Ford Focus 4dr Hatch

160-horsepower 2.0L I4 6-speed automatic FWD

2000 mi automatic transmission failed to shift properly. "check engine" light on.
18060 mi Jerky transmission. 3rd trip but to my reliable guy who test drove just after bad trip. No sign of jerky but he suggested every time I shut off the engine, the computer re-boots. More dealer trips planned.
21700 mi In shop for 10 days of warranty work on transmission. A cracked seal leaked oil and the computer kept me in 1st gear to prevent damage. Now fixed but still shudders sometimes in reverse, and ascending hills at slow speeds e.g. approaching stop lights.
43400 mi I'm not happy with the transmission. I think it slips at highway speeds (confirmed before it was rebuilt). Sometimes it hesitates when cresting a peak, mini-lurches when starting, or mini-surges at parking lot speeds.
67580 mi Continued rough shifting on acceleration. Sure wish I had my stick shift back. Will take in for repairs when I swap snow tires.
67580 mi Transmission never fixed. Also continued problems with SYNC.
30000 mi Update system pron to latest software to improve drive-ability, again. Shifts MUCH better (off line and 1-2) but mileage down 1-2mpg.
56000 mi Transmission clutch replaced per TSB
73000 mi Replaced with new clutch due to shuttering
32240 mi Dual clutch transmission, replaced both clutches. Shudder gone, but still shook when stopped in Drive. Traded car.
52700 mi Car stuttered A Couple Times. Dealer Said The Software In The Engine Computer And Transmission Were Outdated. They Both Needed To Be Reprogrammed.
111000 mi

US $200
Car would not start first time you turn the key. Requires a new range selector.
124300 mi Start issue came back. Transmission control module was diagnosed as bad. Covered under extended warranty with $100 deductible. Since then ford extended the TCM to 10 years/150k. Refund for deductible has been issued.
88000 mi Car stalled out, and wouldn't turn back on. Computer overrode transmission, it was part of a recall.
141000 mi Transmission control module failed, was not shifting into certain gears. Turns out there was an extended warranty on this to 150,000 miles. $1000 part replaced for free
28000 mi Car shudders between 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd gear and also shudders in low gear at slow speed up a steep grade. Transmission was re-programmed. Car improved a lot but still has shuddering up hills at slow speed in 2nd.
63500 mi Re-programmed TCM and then car failed to shift out of 2nd gear. Replaced Transmission Control Module under warranty.
22000 mi The Focus 'automatic stickshift' was shifting improperly for and, after several trips back to the dealer where I was told, "Unable to duplicate problem," I threatened to call Ford. Problem detected and still waiting for backordered parts. Ford called me and offered a rental car at no charge to re-repair the transmission stumbling on acceleration from a stop. The repair was effective as the dealer was instructed to replace the clutch-packs which had been malfunctioning.
95000 mi clutches were again a problem and they were replaced and reprogrammed. This is the 5th or 6th repair.
47800 mi Transmission felt like a solenoid was going. Required an update and reflash of the tranny module.
61700 mi Control module
66000 mi Transmission issue remains

42000 mi Software update to address transmission shudder and grinding. Problem appears to be better, but is still there somewhat.
21000 mi Replace clutch pack assembly, seals, other transmission parts per TSB 11-12-13 due to bad seal leaking oil and causing slippage.
26000 mi Transmission grinding between gears. Reproduced concern on test drive with tech, but Ford will not replace transmission again.
30000 mi Check engine light came on, problem determined to be because of transmission, dealer reprogrammed transmission software.
19000 mi PCM, Trans control, and ABS updated to latest program pursuant to a customer satisfaction campaign.
24000 mi REMOVED TRANS, FOUND INPUT SHAFT BEARING IN CASE BAD, REPLACED BEARING, SEAL AND ALL SNAP RINGS, REASSEM TRANS, REASSEM TRANS, RESET CLUTCH, INSTALLED CLUTCH ASY, REINSTALLING TRANS UNABLE TO SHIFT REV TO 1ST, REMOVED CLUTCH AND FOUND NOT RELEASING, REPLA

33440 mi Dual clutches replaced under warranty. Ford extended warranty to lifetime because of unresolved design defect with leaking seals
40300 mi Transmission control module died. New TCM installed under warranty. Dealer first tried reprogramming TCM but this made the problem even worse
19100 mi

US $35

18600 mi Tsb for transmission
24700 mi Replaced clutches
23000 mi Car stuttering from stop; software re flashed for DCT.
59000 mi Clutch was completely replaced as per technical service bulletin.
72000 mi

US $100
Seals were replaced on transmission as they had failed. 70k maintenance work done as well.
75000 mi

US $25
TCM was replaced again; this marking the third time.
8000 mi Vehicle shudder on tip in when accelerating from a stop. Removed transmission, replaced clutch assy. Car lags/bogs/hesitates on tip-in from stop or on downshift when passing. Very dangerous when turning from suicide lane. Dealership stated: Caused by-NORMAL, No problem Found. Issue not present after transmission was repaired.
37000 mi First stage clutch replaced again (see repairs when car was new) for delay and shuddering. Dealer said it was a known problem-stated there were multiple supersessions of that clutch.
59900 mi Transmission exhibits severe hesitation on tip in. Shifts are harsh and erratic between 1,2 and 3. Dealer stated Ford acknowledges problem. Extended the warranty. Dealer r2 fluid, reflashed module and said Warranty ppwk is in the mail.
63000 mi Sold vehicle. Ford changed 3 first stage clutches, loaded a TSB and it still exhibited the same characteristics. Symptoms would improve with new tranny fluid (2qts) for a period of time. 2012 Focus loaner did the same thing.
18000 mi Rough shifts. TCM/PCM update
68500 mi Rough shifting
125000 mi

US $2000
Replaced dual clutch assembly, shiftforks, seals and bearing
58000 mi Transmission shudder on acceleration. Clutches replaced under warranty
17980 mi Firmware update for jerky automatics transmission
77600 mi DCT clutch plates repaired under warranty for second time.
84000 mi New TCM required. Part backordered
64000 mi Experienced transmission shuttering and overheating. Dealer replaced transmission control module covered by an extended warranty that Ford introduced due to high rates of dual-clutch transmission issues.
7000 mi Recall to replace update transmission computer module for much improved shifting
55000 mi Warranty item - acceleration was jerky at low speeds. Transmission computer firmware was updated. Drives like it's brand new now. :)
26000 mi Transmission kicks and shifting hard from 1st to 2nd under normal acceleration. After tests, diagnosed faulty clutch. Replaced clutch assembly and seals. Learned from online forums that problem plagues clutches on many new Focus and Fiesta.
55000 mi Transmission slips on acceleration when hot, does not engage in to 2nd gear correctly. "Check parking aid" warning light came on also. Replaced Transmission control module and both problems were solved.
67000 mi Fluttering noise when going from 2nd to 3rd. Performed diagnostic that showed issue. Ford knows the clutch is the issue and was making a new one. Took 4 months to get new clutch in. Car was drivable but issue worsened over time.
24200 mi Transmission Control Module had a short circuit, bad wiring - required replacement. Part # AE8Z7Z369F
62000 mi Clutch felt like it was slipping at low speeds and light acceleration. The transmission was pulled and examined and no hardware issues found. New software was flashed. Minor improvement noticed.
63000 mi Check engine light came on and car lost power to the wheels while on the highway. Was towed to dealer. The Transmission Control Module (TCM) was replaced. The new transmission control was a lemon and failed within 100 miles. Was towed back to dealer and it was replaced again.
9000 mi Computer adjusted for shifting problem, car balked and stuttered on low gear shift, especially stop and go traffic
53300 mi Clutch was shuddering (again!). The clutch had to be cleaned because a leak had developed. Then the oil leak had to be repaired. Ford cannot fix the transmission shuddering problem via programming or replacement parts. The flawed design causes premature wear and tear in the clutch assembly. This car will have to be repaired every year or two until it dies!
47000 mi Clutch assembly and bearings had to be replaced again to stop shuddering during gear changes.
50700 mi Had to yet again reprogram the transmission.
73000 mi Transmission has to replaced yet again for the shuddering problem and bad shifting between gears.
79000 mi Car lurches on start and then wants to stall out. The service technician essentially said that's how the transmission works and essentially said nothing was wrong despite so many recalls and repairs done previously that never really fixed the problem.
83000 mi

US $160
Transmission is jerky and shudders upon acceleration when changing gears. The repair technician just said the transmission operates as designed. In essence, Ford's new corporate strategy is to deny the long standing problem doesn't exist even though there are numerous class action lawsuits regarding their transmissions and this is a very well known problem.
88000 mi

US $59
Transmission again shudders badly when shifting gears. Dealership said nothing was wrong even though I can reliably replicate the problem just driving the car off the lot and they tried to levy a service charge of $59.00 on me to discourage me from bringing the car back for what is a well known and documented problem. A week later, my service charge was refunded when I ran the issue up the flagpole.
90000 mi

US $109
Also, took the transmission in for repair since it is shuddering again between gear shifts, but Ford's policy is simply to refuse to repair the issues regardless of recall our factory extended warranty which I purchased.
5000 mi Transmission software update.
35000 mi Replacement of DCT transmission to correct hesitation, grinding and shifting problems.
61000 mi Transmission shudders while accelerating. Dealer said it is both a TCM module reprogramming and clutch replacement issue. Dealer reflashed TCM but needed to order replacement clutch parts which are nationally back ordered for 2-3 months.
64400 mi Had to wait four months for new clutch parts to arrive. Part of a TSB and covered under the original factory warranty.
38800 mi Car acted like it was in nuetral. Transmission Control Module replaced.
41700 mi Replaced the clutch (a recommended TSB) and reprogrammed transmission. The clutch had a mild shuddering issue previously. Recommended by ford - good to do this in warranty!
43000 mi 2nd gear was slipping severely when warm
Bought new on 8/27 with 7 miles on car. 8/28 car jerking upon acceleration after stop. Little power on inclines. 8/29 took in for service. Only 187 miles on car. 8/30 throttle body replaced. Was told car was fixed and that I could pick up.
14000 mi Shudder in front end returned and getting worse. Perform TSB 13-4-5. Reprogram PCM and TCM Car still shuddering, but not as bad. Shuddering worse when A/C is running. Perform 13-4-5 Replace trans clutch.
28600 mi Car bucking and jerking when accelerating. Worse when driving on incline, shudder when shifting. Tech found TSB 140047 Reprogram PCM TCM (AGAIN!) Tech says within specs. July, 2014 shudder still present. Dealer- maybe replace clutch (AGAIN!)
34000 mi Returned car to dealer for ongoing shuddering on 8/11/2014. Told clutch needs to be replaced again. As of 8/16- still at dealer. Opened a case with Ford 6/2014 for Buyback/Replacement. Ford offered X plan and poor trade-in value instead.
22000 mi I'm hoping someone can offer some insight... I've had ongoing issues with the transmission and clutch since purchasing new. The clutch has been replaced twice and the transmission has been reprogrammed 4 or 5 times now (within 35, 000)
66400 mi Third internal clutch replacement. Also another transmission reprogram (at least 2 reprograms per year for front end shudder)
1860 mi Typical problem with the new automated manual transmission: lurching, poor idle. Controlling computer was reprogrammed and the problems were reduced. There was a TSB, that the dealer reluctantly admitted to when pressed.
75700 mi shuddering. ordered replacement clutch.
97000 mi Install third clutch, flash TCM
97000 mi California lemon repurchased by ford for transmission clutches.
32000 mi There was shuddering upon taking off from a stop,and/or while making a turn from a stop. The clutch was replaced along with a newer updated seal. Along with an update on the transmission software.
79200 mi Recall for reflash of the transmission. Seemed to improve it.
21000 mi Grinding noise from 1st to 2nd. Worse when turning left. Applied TSB 13-9-4. Seems OK now
64684 mi Clutch replaced for free under extended transmission warranty
13700 mi There was a slow studder shift issue reported on websites and I requested and received the ECU firmware upgrade to reduce this problem.
74000 mi Car stumbled and died in the drive thru line at Starbucks on the way to church on Sunday morning. WOULD NOT restart. Used the key in the slot and it still wouldn't start. Kept saying "Parking Assist needs Service". Very funny, i DON'T
78000 mi Returned to dealer AGAIN for transmission slipping issues while in Drive. NUMEROUS problems with this car. Dealer checked and then re-programmed the Transmission shift unit. Car likely to get new Transmission in next 6 months Said Dealer
40000 mi The vehicle was shuddering and hesitating at the top of 2nd gear.
64000 mi Transmission shudders when shifting, especially at low speeds. The dealer replaced the clutch packs an reprogrammed the transmission.
75800 mi The car had no power in reverse and wouldn't shift out of first gear. Transmission error message on dashboard. Transmission Control Module and clutch packs were replaced.
97000 mi The clutch packs went bad again. The dealer replaced the clutch packs under warranty. Also reprogrammed the PCM/TCM
30200 mi I had a small shudder and slipping from the clutches. There is a TSB for this which is a trans leak, then clutches would get oil soaked. All they had to do was to remove and clean the clutches and replace the seals. Works much better now.
37000 mi

US $45
Once in a while it would briefly flashing hill start assist on start up, dealer put it on the scanner, did not find anything, also hasn't done it since that time.
38000 mi Clutches were shuddering and slipping a little, dealer reprogrammed it, but it still needs new clutches and seals, which are on a national back order right now.
38300 mi Parts finally came in, after about a months wait. The dealer replaced clutches, seals, throw out bearing and reprogramming.
40000 mi Flashing hill start assist on start up, took it to the dealer diagnosed as a faulty tcm which was replaced under it's extended warranty.
45000 mi Slipping and shuddering, replaced clutch packs and seals with reprogramming. Also had the battery replaced.

49000 mi Transmission shifted rough and jerked at low speeds.
51000 mi Car jerked and halted. Shop could not duplicate, computer said everything within params.

Intermittently, the speedometer would cease to function and/or fluctuate for a portion of my commute. Occasionally it was accompanied by rough shifts, but then normalized within about 2-5 minutes. A code of P0720 was given after the problem persisted through multiple drives and ultimately was self-diagnosed (Googled) to be a problem with the output speed sensor. I was able to find a speed sensor from NAPA that fit the car for $32, which was better than most other stores (at around $50) and online retailers didn't carry many options.
