| Ford Focus Fuel Economy: Pros | ||
| Year | Body/Powertrain | Comment |
| 2013 | 4dr Hatch turbocharged 252hp 2.0L I4 6-speed manual FWD |
Have never managed to achieve the posted fuel economy average for this car (26), even with extremely careful driving,70% highway. Driving it hard nets only a few mpg worse than hypermile type driving. |
| 2012 | 4dr Hatch 160-horsepower 2.0L I4 6-speed automated manual FWD |
Very good highway mileage; city mpg average at best |
| 2012 | 4dr Sedan 160-horsepower 2.0L I4 6-speed automated manual FWD |
It has more horsepower, torque and is quieter than my other car, but gets 4 mpg higher fuel economy in the same driving. |
| 2010 | 4dr Sedan 140-horsepower 2.0L I4 4-speed automatic FWD |
Hard driving - stop and go on the highway gets me 30+ mpg. |
| 2010 | 4dr Sedan 140-horsepower 2.0L I4 4-speed automatic FWD |
Good fuel economy, getting 30 MPG in town |
| 2010 | 4dr Sedan 140-horsepower 2.0L I4 5-speed manual FWD |
Three days of extensive driving only burned up 1/4 of a tank. |

With manual, w/o cruise, highway mpg 40+, average 30+ |
| 2009 | 2dr Coupe 140-horsepower 2.0L I4 4-speed automatic FWD |
The rated 27 mpg is on the money. I have gotten as high as 37 on the highway. Nice feeling to pass the gas station more often without having to buy gas. |
| 2009 | 4dr Sedan 140-horsepower 2.0L I4 4-speed automatic FWD |
The fuel economy is great on a fixed income, and allows us to be able to do a few more things and go a few more places. |
| 2009 | 4dr Sedan 140-horsepower 2.0L I4 5-speed manual FWD |
With mixed highway and city driving and a medium heavy foot, I still average about 31mpg. |
| 2009 | 2dr Coupe 143-horsepower 2.0L I4 5-speed manual FWD |
35 mpg will save $ in the long run. |
| 2009 | 4dr Sedan 140-horsepower 2.0L I4 5-speed manual FWD |
Unconfirmed reports have stated people getting up to 39 miles per gallon highway with the 5 speed. This is very appealing to me as gas prices will rise again. |
| 2008 | 4dr Sedan 140-horsepower 2.0L I4 5-speed manual FWD |
Surface street driving to work and around town. First 4 fill-ups averaged: 33 mpg, 31 mpg, 32 mpg & 32.5 mpg. |
| 2008 | 2dr Coupe 140-horsepower 2.0L I4 5-speed manual FWD |
Great MPG. Window sticker said 24-35, I average way better. My normal driving is 75/25 city/hwy and I get about 30-32mpg - hwy/interstate only, I can push over 37mpg running at 70-71mph! Best tank so far was 42.2 miles per gallon!! |
| 2008 | 4dr Sedan 140-horsepower 2.0L I4 4-speed automatic FWD |
On my daily 250 round trip commute I average around 33MPG. There are new vehicles that get better but they usually come with higher price tags which offset any fuel savings. |
| 2008 | 2dr Coupe 140-horsepower 2.0L I4 5-speed manual FWD |
There are better and worse than the Focus, but the car does well with the 5-speed manual. I've seen 38 mpg on a tank of gas with lots of highway driving. |
| 2008 | 4dr Sedan 140-horsepower 2.0L I4 4-speed automatic FWD |
It ranks among the highest in its class, without the extra expense of a hybrid. It is also a Partial Zero Emission Vehicle. |
| 2008 | 4dr Sedan 140-horsepower 2.0L I4 5-speed manual FWD |
Returns steady 35 mpg, even with a good mix of city driving. Consistently better than EPA estimates. |
| 2008 | 4dr Sedan 140-horsepower 2.0L I4 4-speed automatic FWD |
I have seen a low of 29.6 and a high of 37.2 mpg. |
| 2007 | 4dr Hatch 136-horsepower 2.0L I4 4-speed automatic FWD |
We consistently get 30-33 mpg on the road which puts it at the bottom of the barely acceptable IMHO. Still, that's better than most we looked at cars of that age. It has a small, but peppy engine that gives us all the power we're interested in. |
| 2007 | 4dr Sedan 136-horsepower 2.0L I4 4-speed automatic FWD |
I have a 30 mile per direction commute to work, so fuel economy was of utmost importance. This car gets better than average fuel economy because it is very lightweight. However, I average around 32mpg highway (80% highway) and around 21mpg city (20% city). This is not the purported 38/29 highway/city mpg that was advised at the time of purchase. |
| 2007 | 2dr Hatch 136-horsepower 2.0L I4 5-speed manual FWD |
Car gets very respectable fuel economy. It is not a standout with todays new vehicles, but will hold its own. 100% city driving is usually met with a mpg average of approximately 28. This is good considering driving style is not suited for fuel mileage. On the highway, as long as speeds are kept around 70, the car will return figures from 32-37. |
| 2007 | 4dr Sedan 151-horsepower 2.3L I4 5-speed manual FWD |
Mileage isn't that great for a car its size (28-30 mpg highway), but it's still pretty good in the scheme of things. Also helps that it works fine w/ 87 octane fuel. |
| 2007 | 4dr Sedan 136-horsepower 2.0L I4 4-speed automatic FWD |
It gets over 32 mpg on the highway. |
| 2007 | 2dr Hatch 136-horsepower 2.0L I4 4-speed automatic FWD |
30+ mpg with an automatic and using the A/C is great! |
| 2007 | 4dr Sedan 136-horsepower 2.0L I4 5-speed manual FWD |
Very reasonable fuel economy for a 4-dr car. |
| 2006 | 2dr Hatch 136-horsepower 2.0L I4 5-speed manual FWD |
My Focus consistantly returns 28-31 MPG per gallon mixed driving conditions and much higher on highway trips. |
| 2006 | 2dr Hatch 136-horsepower 2.0L I4 5-speed manual FWD |
Averages about 25mpg. I have got 35mpg on a long stretch of driving through Montana. |
| 2006 | 4dr Sedan 136-horsepower 2.0L I4 4-speed automatic FWD |
If driven at 60 mph on freeway Have gotten 35 mpg. Most driving daily 65-75 gets 33 worst I have gotten was 29 mpg |
| 2005 | 4dr Sedan 151-horsepower 2.3L I4 5-speed manual FWD |
Great balance of power and fuel economy. Average approximately 30 MPG in around town driving or high speed 70 mph plus Interstate cruising. At 55 MPH will deliver 38 MPG on long trips. Very consistent fuel economy after 55,000 miles. |
| 2005 | 2dr Hatch 136-horsepower 2.0L I4 5-speed manual FWD |
On long highway trips I typically get well over 30 MPG - though it falls off a bit when driving locally. |
| 2005 | 4dr Hatch 136-horsepower 2.0L I4 5-speed manual FWD |
I recorded over 42 MPG on a 2500 kilometer trip from the West Coast, and we normally average over 24 MPG in the city. |
| 2005 | 4dr Sedan 136-horsepower 2.0L I4 4-speed automatic FWD |
I get about 32 on the highway average while averaging about 75 MPH. |
| 2005 | 4dr Wagon 136-horsepower 2.0L I4 4-speed automatic FWD |
Averaged about 30 mpg throughout the life of the car. |
| 2004 | 4dr Sedan 145-horsepower 2.3L I4 5-speed manual FWD |
While not as high as my 1986 Mazda 626 at 34mpg the Mazda was not as quick. So I am quite satisfied with the 32-33mpg I currently get. |
| 2004 | 2dr Hatch 130-horsepower 2.0L I4 4-speed automatic FWD |
Fuel economy, although not great is good. Helps my daughter on a limited budget. |
| 2004 | 4dr Sedan 145-horsepower 2.3L I4 4-speed automatic FWD |
I could go for days without filling it up if I drove like a normal person. I put almost 200 miles on it in two weeks so that good fuel economy helped. |
| 2003 | 4dr Wagon 145-horsepower 2.3L I4 5-speed manual FWD |
Overall, 30MPG is very reasonable. |
| 2003 | 4dr Hatch 170-horsepower 2.0L I4 6-speed manual FWD |
25 to 35 MPG |
| 2002 | 2dr Hatch 130-horsepower 2.0L I4 5-speed manual FWD |
fairly good |

It's relatively easy in the other Focus models to average low to mid 30's for economy. This matches the EPA estimates. But the ST struggles to achieve anything close to EPA estimates in the real world. Mileage is more like a minivan than a small sedan. They should have included better engine management (like stop/start) or even separate fuel maps for economy and Sport modes. |
| 2010 | 4dr Sedan 140-horsepower 2.0L I4 4-speed automatic FWD |
Great fuel economy. Abt 30 mpg with hard highway driving and abt 26-27mpg with all suburban driving. |
| 2007 | 4dr Hatch 136-horsepower 2.0L I4 4-speed automatic FWD |
30+ mpg really is not nearly good enough. |
| 2005 | 4dr Hatch 136-horsepower 2.0L I4 4-speed automatic FWD |
It was only rated at 24mpg by Consumer Reports - and with a smaller, less powerful engine than the 3 (which was rated at 25) |
| 2005 | 4dr Sedan 151-horsepower 2.3L I4 5-speed manual FWD |
Economy is somewhat disappointing for a compact - I average 22 mpg around town. |
| 2005 | 4dr Hatch 136-horsepower 2.0L I4 4-speed automatic FWD |
Poor in town and highway. Extremely disappointed. I would not mind the 20mpg if this was translated into 0-60 times of 6 seconds - but it is not. I have no idea where the fuel goes - it is certainly not converted into power. |
| 2005 | 4dr Wagon 136-horsepower 2.0L I4 4-speed automatic FWD |
Fuel economy at 30 mpg (average) was OK but not spectacular. I blame the 4 speed automatic for that and suspect I might have done better with the 5 speed manual. |
| 2004 | 2dr Hatch 145-horsepower 2.3L I4 4-speed automatic FWD |
Lower than expected (23-24mpg avg), but performance makes up for it. |
| 2003 | 4dr Hatch 170-horsepower 2.0L I4 6-speed manual FWD |
Suburban fuel economy is acceptable, at nearly 30 mpg. But on the highway, with the engine spinning well over 3,000 rpm, fuel economy also struggles to crack 30. Many much larger, much more powerful cars achieve better highway fuel economy. Some owners have fitted the fifth gear from the related transmission in the Mazda6 to get more of an overdrive. |
| 2003 | 2dr Hatch 170-horsepower 2.0L I4 6-speed manual FWD |
It is very heavy on fuel. Around 11.5l/100km in town and 7.0 to 8.0l/100km on the open road. |
| 2003 | 4dr Hatch 170-horsepower 2.0L I4 6-speed manual FWD |
I wasn't personally very focused on fuel economy, but the SVT wasn't very fuel efficient for a fairly light car with a normally-aspirated 2.0-liter engine. The original EPA ratings were 21 mpg city, 25 mpg highway. Using the 2008+ adjustments, they'd be 18/23 if the car was available today. |
