TrueDelta Reviews the Real Gas Mileage of the Honda Pilot

Honda Pilot Real Gas Mileage: Pros
YearComment
2016 Aided by cylinder deactivation while cruising, the 2015 Honda Pilot's fuel economy figures were about average in the class: 18 MPG city, 25 MPG highway with front-wheel drive (FWD) and 17/24 with all-wheel drive (AWD). For 2016, a reduction in curb weight, an updated engine, and a sixth transmission ratio bump the ratings to 19/27 with FWD and 18/26 with AWD. The Touring and Elite trims include a nine-speed automatic that adds another MPG to the city ratings, tying the best-in-class Nissan Pathfinder. The Toyota Highlander doesn't even do as well with its base four-cylinder engine (20/25) and lags with its V6 (19/25 with FWD, 18/24 with AWD). In hybrid form the Highlander only has much of an edge in city driving (27/28). The Ford Explorer is competitive with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine (19/28 with FWD, 18/26 with AWD), but with a V6 falls well short of the Pilot's fuel efficiency. As do the GM crossovers. In my suburban driving the Pilot's trip computer typically reported low 20s but as high as 27.7. This is similar to the Pathfinder and a few MPG better than the Highlander. On a 70-MPH hgihway the trip computer reported an average of 26 MPG. see full Honda Pilot review

Honda Pilot Real Gas Mileage: Pros
YearBody/PowertrainComment
2012 4dr SUV 250-horsepower 3.5L V6
5-speed automatic AWD
City fuel economy is lousy (average about 11 mpg), but our highway numbers are great for such a huge vehicle, particularly if we stay at 65 mph or slower. I've been able to sustain 29 mpg on a flat road at 55 mph. see full Honda Pilot review
2011 4dr SUV 250-horsepower 3.5L V6
5-speed automatic AWD
When new, routinely 13L per 100 or worse, but improved after 1st oil change. Now at 10,000 Km, the gas mileage is around 11.6L per 100 in mixed driving. Gas mileage is VERY sensitive to wind direction. see full Honda Pilot review

Dodge Journey Real Gas Mileage: Cons
YearBody/PowertrainComment
2016 4dr SUV 283-horsepower 3.6L V6
6-speed shiftable automatic AWD
16 /24 in the AWD V6, 19 overall per the EPA. The city number is quite poor, though the highway number is competitive. We don't put all that many miles on our cars so it was something that we could more easily overlook, but if you've got a fairly long commute that isn't mostly on the highway, this might be a deal breaker. see full Dodge Journey review
2012 4dr SUV 283-horsepower 3.6L V6
6-speed shiftable automatic FWD
The biggest disappointment for the car is the lower fuel economy. On the highway, it gets right around 30, but in town driving suddenly drops to under 20. That's a big difference, and since it is primarily used around town (less than 15% highway) we're paying a bit more in fuel costs. see full Dodge Journey review
