| 2013 | There's plenty of legroom in the rear seat, but the same can be said of most compact crossovers. Based on the official specs the Mazda has 4.4 inches more total legroom than a VW Tiguan, but to me the Tiguan's rear seat seemed slightly roomier and more comfortable owing to a higher position. The rear seat reclines in the VW and some other compact crossovers, but not in the Mazda. The Escape's rear seat is considerably less spacious than the others. The rear seat is roomy enough for an average or above average adult, but the seats themselves could be better-- perhaps more sculpted and padded. Not nearly as comfortable as the front seats after an hour or two. I'm sure, however, that this is a common complaint on other smaller SUVs too, having tried them out at dealers, so it's not unique to Mazda. I find the front seat of this car to be incredibly comfortable. Everything is easily within reach and seems to fit me perfectly. My only complaint is that there's no good place to put my purse, but that's been the case with every car I've owned. see full Mazda Protege review |

The backseat is a little tight, so it would not be comfortable for a large person or for a long drive. Thankfully, my husband and I are on the small side, and our daughter is pretty tiny too, so it doesn't really bother us at all. see full Mazda Protege review |
