TrueDelta Reviews the Real Gas Mileage of the Mercedes-Benz GLK

Mercedes-Benz GLK Real Gas Mileage: Pros
YearComment
2013 Fuel economy was a "why not to buy" with the GLK350, as the gas-powered Mercedes-Benz crossover trails the competing Audi and BMW in this area. With the diesel, though, the tables turn. BMW doesn't offer a diesel X3 in North America, at least not yet. For 2014, Audi does offer a Q5 TDI.When I heard that Audi was going to offer a diesel compact crossover, I assumed that the engine in question would be a four-cylinder unit. Nope, it's a 240-horsepower 3.0-liter V6. The official line: a four-cylinder wouldn't suit Audi's performance-oriented brand image in the U.S. With a much smaller engine and (partly as a result) a couple hundred pounds less curb weight, the GLK250 BlueTEC tops the Q5 in fuel economy. But, according to the EPA, only on the highway, with a rating of 33 mpg vs. 31.Both crossovers achieve an EPA city rating of 24 mpg. In the real world, the GLK250 impresses in suburuban driving, with the trip computer usually reporting averages from 31 to 35, and on one run to my son's school nearly 40. This is about 50 percent better than in the GLK350. see full Mercedes-Benz GLK review
Mercedes-Benz GLK Real Gas Mileage: Cons
YearComment
2010 If you prioritize performance, the GLK's mandatory 3.5-liter V6, upgraded via direct injection from 268 to 302 horsepower for 2013, might seem a good thing. But even after the power bump, the boosted sixes in the Audi and BMW are stronger, and they're paired with more responsive eight-speed automatics (vs. a seven-speed transmission introduced nearly a decade ago). More of an issue for most potential buyers: fuel economy. The GLK350 is more efficient for 2013, thanks to direct injection, electric-steering assist, driving style feedback, and a shudder-free automatic start/stop system (study it, BMW). The EPA ratings have improved from last year's 16 mpg city, 21 highway to 19/24. But even 19/24 is only marginally competitive in the 2013 challenge. The BMW X3 xDrive28i is nearly as quick, and rates 21/28. The quicker X3 xDrive35i matches the GLK in the city, but does a couple mpg better on the highway. In our real-world suburban driving, the GLK350 trailed the BMW X3 xDrive28i by one to two mpg. Not a big difference, but a difference. Mercedes will soon offer a more fuel-efficient engine option in North American GLKs. But it won't be a smaller gas engine. Instead, the new GLK250 will be motivated by a 190-horsepower, four-cylinder diesel engine. see full Mercedes-Benz GLK review

The diesel option was the #1 reason I looked at the vehicule and the deciding point to go with it. At over 200 miles per day to communte, I needed the mileage numbers and in Quebec, diesel is less expensive than regular gas and way less than premium. see full Mercedes-Benz GLK review

2011 4dr SUV 268-horsepower 3.5L V6

A major disappointment. But, to be fair, I live at the top of a mountain in LA and all of my past cars also had bad mileage. It isn't bad on the highway...I get average of 22 mpg...but pure city driving drags it down to 16-17. see full Mercedes-Benz GLK review

having owned a c280 with 3 liter engine and been very happy with performance plus low 30s highway, mid to high 20s suburban, why not put 3 liter in the glk? while glk is heavier, 3.5 liter penalizes mpg for little better performance. otherwise there is nothing not to like and alot to like about this great vehicle. see full Mercedes-Benz GLK review

Great V8 exhaust note and instant acceleration comes at the cost of about 19 mpg in combined driving, versus 25 with my new car. That is a 30% increase. (the new car is 600 pounds lighter though...) see full Pontiac Grand Prix review

17-19 mpg in the city. 25 If I drive on the intersate. 30 is possible at 60mph. Most of my driving is in the city. The beautiful v8 makes it impossible to stay out of the gas, but it can run on REG fuel. see full Pontiac Grand Prix review
