Toyota is always one of the more reliable brands. I have been pretty rough with it and put a lot of miles on it, but have had very few serious problems.
This car gets over 30 miles per gallon.

Why Not the 2002 Toyota Corolla?
You will feel every bump in a Corolla. It is not as smooth of a ride as some of the higher end cars (though is consistent with other cars in its class).
Even new, the engine and AC were pretty loud.
The back seat is tiny.
The back seat folds down, but there is an inexplicable frame that restricts how large something can be that you can insert through the trunk through the back seat.
