$200
Coolant system overflow bottle low level light came on. Filled bottle, next day light on again. Found slight leak coming from water pump area. (known problem area) . Changed waterpump, found the impeller bearing shot and the cause for the leak. The plastic waterpump housing is also prone to cracking, which was not in my case. Installed an aluminum waterpump. Repair took long time, because engine inlet must be removed to get good access. The dealer seems to do the repair from below without removing the inlet, but without a bridge this is not doable at home.

Awful driveability problems. Rough idling, poor performance, low fuel economy. CEL light on and flashing. Then a sudden recovery and car runs well for several days. Rinse, lather, repeat. Happened for the dealer as well. Dealer contacted VW Technical department. Unclear if in USA or Germany. Told to replace coolant sensor as an odd failure mode could cause this problem and not give a distinct fault code for a defective sensor. That idea worked!
