6-speed shiftable automatic FWD
Owned a 2001 New Beetle and had the same reliability problems. Had an extended warranty, but the vehicle was in the shop too frequently to be useful. Purchased the 2004 because it was convertible. full 2004 Volkswagen Beetle review

2002 2dr Hatch 115-horsepower 2.0L I4
4-speed automatic FWD
If we could have afforded to purge this car from our lives sooner, we would have! Every time I felt that maybe I was being negative, it would fail in some way and assure me that I was not wrong. full 2002 Volkswagen Beetle review
