I would check the Golf forums. My opinion is that the car won't go much longer without requiring some moderately expensive repairs. VW and Audi engines tend to burn oil. I recently drove my friend's 2009 Audi A3 2.0T and the oil light came on while I was test driving it. He added oil just 2 days before because he knows to frequently check the oil level since he knows it burns/leaks oil. He just didn't know it was that severe. He is getting rid of it as soon as possible because it is getting excessive and killing the engine. It's a fun car, but not when it needs an engine replacement. His car has 140k miles (mostly highway mileage I think) and he takes care of it meticulously, but sometimes that isn't enough.
