What Our Members Are Saying about the Real Gas Mileage of the Volkswagen Tiguan

Volkswagen Tiguan Real Gas Mileage: Pros
YearBody/PowertrainComment
2013 4dr SUV turbocharged 200hp 2.0L I4
6-speed shiftable automatic FWD
Swapped the paper filter for a K&N filter, kept the original air box. Get over 24mpg city, close to 30 on the freeway w/ moderate hills. see full Volkswagen Tiguan review
2012 4dr SUV turbocharged 200hp 2.0L I4
6-speed shiftable automatic AWD
For a small crossover/suv its pretty good. Went on a 400 mile round trip to the mountains (5,500ft elevation) for the weekend and back (2,00ft elevation) and averaged 26mpg. Day to day driving I get about 25.5mpg without trying to be conservative. see full Volkswagen Tiguan review
2009 4dr SUV turbocharged 140hp 2.0L I4 Diesel
6-speed manual AWD
40+ mpg constantly. see full Volkswagen Tiguan review
Volkswagen Tiguan Real Gas Mileage: Cons
YearBody/PowertrainComment
2013 4dr SUV turbocharged 200hp 2.0L I4
6-speed shiftable automatic AWD
Our Tiguan ranges from 20-30 mpg, between city and highway cruising. It's consistently about 5 mpg thirstier than the GTI. Blame the extra weight, but there's less than 400 lbs of that, IIRC. Or blame the AWD, but it's part-time only. I blame the large aero cross-section; it stands about a foot taller than a Golf. If VW would offer a TDI in the Tiguan, they'd sell as many as they could spare to the US market. I'd be standing in line. see full Volkswagen Tiguan review
2009 4dr SUV turbocharged 200hp 2.0L I4
6-speed shiftable automatic AWD
Bring the tdi diesel to the US and problem solved. see full Volkswagen Tiguan review
2009 4dr SUV turbocharged 200hp 2.0L I4
6-speed shiftable automatic FWD
Less than I had hoped for at around 25mpg average. see full Volkswagen Tiguan review
2009 4dr SUV turbocharged 200hp 2.0L I4
6-speed shiftable automatic AWD
Its OK, but could be better. I see 21-22 suburban, as much as 28 on long highway trips. Premium fuel is the bigger drawback. see full Volkswagen Tiguan review
