TrueDelta Reviews the Real Gas Mileage of the Honda Pilot

Honda Pilot Real Gas Mileage: Pros
YearComment
2016 Aided by cylinder deactivation while cruising, the 2015 Honda Pilot's fuel economy figures were about average in the class: 18 MPG city, 25 MPG highway with front-wheel drive (FWD) and 17/24 with all-wheel drive (AWD). For 2016, a reduction in curb weight, an updated engine, and a sixth transmission ratio bump the ratings to 19/27 with FWD and 18/26 with AWD. The Touring and Elite trims include a nine-speed automatic that adds another MPG to the city ratings, tying the best-in-class Nissan Pathfinder. The Toyota Highlander doesn't even do as well with its base four-cylinder engine (20/25) and lags with its V6 (19/25 with FWD, 18/24 with AWD). In hybrid form the Highlander only has much of an edge in city driving (27/28). The Ford Explorer is competitive with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine (19/28 with FWD, 18/26 with AWD), but with a V6 falls well short of the Pilot's fuel efficiency. As do the GM crossovers. In my suburban driving the Pilot's trip computer typically reported low 20s but as high as 27.7. This is similar to the Pathfinder and a few MPG better than the Highlander. On a 70-MPH hgihway the trip computer reported an average of 26 MPG. see full Honda Pilot review

City fuel economy is lousy (average about 11 mpg), but our highway numbers are great for such a huge vehicle, particularly if we stay at 65 mph or slower. I've been able to sustain 29 mpg on a flat road at 55 mph. see full Honda Pilot review

When new, routinely 13L per 100 or worse, but improved after 1st oil change. Now at 10,000 Km, the gas mileage is around 11.6L per 100 in mixed driving. Gas mileage is VERY sensitive to wind direction. see full Honda Pilot review

TrueDelta Reviews the Real Gas Mileage of the Toyota 4Runner

Toyota 4Runner Real Gas Mileage: Cons
YearComment
2007 The 4Runner's dated powertrain--its automatic transmission is down three gear ratios compared to the Jeep's--and brick-like aerodynamics aren't good for fuel economy. EPA ratings are just 17 city, 21 highway. The Jeep with its V6 engine does the same in city driving, but 3 mpg better on the highway. Plus you can get a diesel engine in the Jeep, and it rates 21/28. In real-world suburban driving, I managed to coax the 4Runner's trip computer average as high as 24.6, but high teens and low 20s were more typical. On the highway the trip computer reported 20.5, close to the EPA rating. see full Toyota 4Runner review

Mid size and large SUVs are not good on fuel economy. While shopping this market fuel economy was a consideration. Fuel economy is projected at 17 mpg in the city and 22-23 mpg on the highway. This is one of the leaders for vehicles in this class. see full Toyota 4Runner review
