Reviewed: 2004 Honda S2000

2dr Convertible 240-horsepower 2.2L I4 6-speed manual RWD

Why the 2004 Honda S2000?

Handling

Impeccable handling, spring/shock rates finely tuned, steering input/response a 10--"track days" no effort. Overall, package instills great confidence and a sense of being "one" with the vehicle, but must be driven with respect in high-speed corners.

Powertrain performance

Smooth, high-revving, exceptionally reliable engine is non-temperamental. The 6-speed, extremely short-throw manual gearbox is arguably one of the top three available at any price. Clutch action is medium and well matched to engine. Excellent balance.

Safety & braking

Perhaps one of the strongest safety features of the 2000 is its brakes. They stop the car with a minimum of effort. Reviews rate them at the top, regardless of vehicle cost. The car has airbags for driver and passenger, and quite adequate side protection.

Exterior styling

Well conceived, only minor changes have occurred in 10 years. The interior is highly ergonomic; switch or lever (lights, wipers, etc.), is reachable with both hands on the wheel, which is fixed--no need to adjust it. Seats are exceptionally comfortable.

Reliability & durability

The car is 4 years old and has demanded nothing except oil changes (synthetic). The unibody is exceptionally stiff for a roadster, no rattles, squeaks or other noises, doors close with authority, the top mechanism is flawless and the paint is as new.

Why Not the 2004 Honda S2000?

Ride smoothness

Firm spring/shock settings contribute to feeling each concrete pavement seam, particularly roads in disrepair. The car prefers asphalt for a "smoother" ride. The higher the speed, the less smoothness is an issue.

Fuel economy

I find 25-30 city/road overall to be most acceptable with a highly tuned engine that begs to be driven hard. We all wish for greater mileage. However, the S2000 is first and last a performance vehicle. With that in mind, I am quite pleased.
