Owning this car is an exercise in need vs. want. 2002 Mazda Protege Pros and Cons ijbrekke Don't buy this car if you're looking for a great engine. It's adequate at best, and as it's aged it has developed a fair amount of vibration felt throughout the cabin. I would say that the engine is the worst large component on the car overall, something that Mazda addressed... |

Sufficient Different- and Better- Then the Sedan 2003 Mazda Protege Pros and Cons Member709 It was actually "overall performance" that clicked for me, but there is only a "powertrain" category. This is not a fast car, but it is a quick, zippy one. Top speed that I have observed was 120 MPH (indicated,) but the car is powered and geared for good take-offs... |

2002 Mazda Protege Pros and Cons Anonymous The power train is a lot of fun. Paired to a 5-speed manual transmission, the Protege5 can be a lot of fun to drive considering it is essentially a reasonably priced "economy" car. |

2003 Mazda Protege Pros and Cons A member in Prince Edward Island, Canada The 2.0L engine is very easy to rev. There is plenty of torque for city driving. Clutch uptake is very smooth. Very light clutch |

2003 Mazda Protege Pros and Cons A member in California, United States Unfortunately Mazdaspeed was quite rushed when developing this car and so it suffers from a few issues. The motor was not reinforced to handle the turbocharger, and may break. The LSD tends to snap if not repaired early. And the wastegates fail. |

2003 Mazda Protege Pros and Cons Member3 Minor engine mods brought dyno output to actual 116 WHP from stock 97, adding needed grunt--revs to just under 7000 with an additional 28 lb/ft of torque. Cut 0-60 by 1.2. Five-speed box a joy. A kick to drive with added power and handling mods. |

2003 Mazda Protege Pros and Cons Member2622 Excellent power and acceleration for a 4 cylinder engine, yet still gets great gas mileage. |

2002 Mazda Protege Pros and Cons Member865 It is underpowered for a car of its size. I wish that I had about 15 or 20 horsepower under the hood when I drive on onramps or have to merge with traffic. I also wish that the top gear was a little taller for reduced revs at highway speeds. |
