Reviewed: 2003 Nissan Pathfinder

4dr SUV 240-horsepower 3.5L V6 4-speed automatic 4WD w/low range

Why the 2003 Nissan Pathfinder?

Powertrain performance

Powerful and versatile on most urban and rural driving surfaces.

Reliability & durability

The VQ35DE engine is proven to be reliable and long-lasting.

Cargo capacity

240HP and 265ft-lbs of torque are more than adequate for the daily and occasional (e.g. camping) needs of most people. A large cargo area with folding rear seats give lots of space as well.

Safety & braking

As a mid-size SUV, it should handle well in the unfortunate case of a collision.

Handling

The All-Mode Automatic 4WD system handles the snowy and icy roads of a Canadian winter beautifully, as well as rough and muddy off-road terrain.

Why Not the 2003 Nissan Pathfinder?

Fuel economy

16MPG city, 19-20 MPG highway leaves much to be desired. Changing the spark plugs every 100,000km (well ahead of the suggested interval) makes a large difference, but economy is still lacking.

Price or payments

As it is an import SUV, you will pay more than comparable domestic SUVs. However, the reliability of the Pathfinder should more than make up for it.

Rear seat room & comfort

Uncomfortable for adults when the front seats are back, but workable for children.
