AWESOME small/mid-size SUV choice - the BEST!

Best Reason to Buy the Subaru Forester: Powertrain performance
I've got the "base" 2.5 litre 4-cylinder "boxer" motor with standard AWD and the Continuously Variable Transmission. The powertrain IS powerful - even with just 170 HP on tap, I've got no issues with acceleration. The engine pulls smoothly (although sometimes noisily at higher RPM) and it's easy to get up to speed. The CVT is great... It takes a moment to get used to the "non-shifting" feel - not feeling the shift between gears. But, again, smooth and easy. Subaru has programmed some shift "feel" into the unit, so it's not like a solid ROAR of engine noise all the time. It "feels" like there is a shift between first and .. 2nd? and then onto "third"... Have yet to achieve the "promised" MPG levels, but I've got a bit of a heavy foot and have been using the A/C almost non-stop since day one - I live in the desert area of Southern California. Have not had any slippage or loss of traction - but I've played on some loose dirt roads and never lost any control.

Best Reason Not to Buy the Subaru Forester: Fuel economy
Fuel economy isn't as great as I'd hoped, but better than the previous vehicle I had - which was smaller, lighter and got worse mileage.

Best Reason to Buy the Subaru Forester: Powertrain performance
The turbo 2.5L engine mated to 5 speed gearbox is very fun to drive. Power comes on strong around 3,000 RPM. 1st and 2nd gear are a riot. The first time I really ripped into 1st and 2nd was on an on ramp to the Hudson Parkway along Manhattan's west side. It was right after the freaky Halloween snow storm of 2011, and there was still slush and snow on the ground. This was a used car with tires needing replacement, and even still, it put so much power to ground that I hit redline at 1st and 2nd before I even realized it. That is the amazingness of Subaru AWD and a TD04 configuration. I love driving this combo.

Best Reason Not to Buy the Subaru Forester: Rear seat room & comfort
This is honesty the only complaint i have about the 2006 XT. The rear seat is a bit tight. We took three other adults on about a 4 hour trip and it was a tight fit - good thing we're good friends! My wife's 2009 Forester is much better in the rear legroom department.

  Subaru reliability?

Best Reason to Buy the Subaru Forester: Powertrain performance
AWD system works great in ice and snow

Best Reason Not to Buy the Subaru Forester: Powertrain performance
So far not impressed with reliability. High oil consumption, loud rumbling noises from engine compartment at 2200-2800 RPM, leaky cam seal.

Best Reason to Buy the Subaru Forester: Powertrain performance
As an XT, this car is great not just as a town runabout, but also as a highway cruiser. It has great takeoff from stoplights and tons of power on the highway. Just make sure to keep an eye on the speedometer because it is easy to not realize just how fast you are going. No one expects this wagon to go as fast as it does, so you will get some dumbfounded looks when you pull away in your "granola-mobile" faster than the teen in his 3 series next to you. Lots of fun, but when you want to just take it easy the car is just as usable.

Best Reason Not to Buy the Subaru Forester: Reliability & durability
Subarus are known for their Japanese make and reliability. But in the year I have owned this car, I have had anything but reliability. In twelve months, the car has been drivable for only 6. And even when it is drivable, it stalls, bucks, and gives a general feel that is not one of confidence.

Best Reason to Buy the Subaru Forester: Handling
Amazing handling, this car feels like it's bolted to the road at all times.

Best Reason to Buy the Subaru Forester: Feature availability
All wheel drive is a plus. Proved very effective this winter.

Best Reason Not to Buy the Subaru Forester: Fuel economy
Mileage is sub par. This Forester replaced a 2007 Ford Fusion all wheel drive. Same driving style, same route, same traffic- 2 mpg less than the V6 Fusion.

Best Reason Not to Buy the Subaru Forester: Powertrain performance
Going up the same steep hill, the Forester managed, but the TDI had power to spare and the difference was compelling. Forester X Ltd nice as it was just could not compete with the diesel in performance.

Best Reason to Buy the Subaru Forester: Powertrain performance
The engine is adequate but nothing to write home about, but the AWD system is by most accounts the best in the segment.

Best Reason Not to Buy the Subaru Forester: Powertrain performance
The 4 cylinder engine combined with the 4 speed automatic provides a decent city driving experience but on the highway it was found to be lacking in power. With the turbo you get worse mileage, have to use premium fuel and have less interior/cargo space.
