Reviewed: 2005 Subaru Legacy

4dr Wagon turbocharged 250hp 2.5L H4 5-speed manual AWD

Why the 2005 Subaru Legacy?

Powertrain performance

power good, especially with 5-speed manual. strong acceleration

Handling

has good body control for a station wagon. steering is linear and communicative. i like the feel of the steering wheel, but would welcome a thicker rim. on a side note, the shifter is balky and rubbery. can be remedied with aftermarket bushings

Safety & braking

awd adds to sense of control and security, especially in rain or snow. braking is adequate with stock tires.

Why Not the 2005 Subaru Legacy?

Fuel economy

poor gas mileage for its size. getting about 18 mpg average in mixed driving. the car also requires 91+ octane.

Audio & nav systems

no option to plug-in aux audio, cd player does not play mp3 files. the audio system and HVAC are a single unit making it difficult to change to an aftermarket unit.
