TrueDelta Reviews the Real Gas Mileage of the GMC Terrain

GMC Terrain Real Gas Mileage: Pros
YearComment
2018 Diesel engines burn far cleaner than they used to. But even the best retain disadvantages. Diesel fuel is nasty, greasy stuff, with a feel closer to motor oil than gasoline. Spill any on your hands, clothes, shoes, or car while filling up and it doesn't evaporate away like gas does. Also, the GMC Terrain's exhaust stinks, especially when its engine is cold. You might want to have the fresh air vent closed if you'll be reversing after starting up the vehicle. Given these disadvantages, a diesel better deliver strong EPA fuel economy ratings, and this four-wheel-drive GMC does: 28 mpg city, 38 mpg highway. (Dropping 4WD adds another mpg to the highway rating.) The Jaguar F-Pace diesel lags, with 26/33, as might be expected given its larger (2.0- vs. 1.6-liter), considerably more powerful (180- vs. 137-horsepower) engine. The RAV4 Hybrid is more economical in city driving, with an EPA rating of 34 mpg, but well behind in highway driving, with an EPA rating of 30. This is typical of diesel vs. hybrid comparisons, as hybrids are designed to recoup energy otherwise burned off by the brakes and thus deliver the largest bump in city driving. Even more than with most vehicles I test, the Terrain diesel's real-world fuel economy varied dramatically based on driving style and conditions. In the suburbs, trip computer averages ranged from 25 to 40 mpg, with most results around 30. On the highway, the trip computer reported low 40s in one direction, then low 30s in the other (on two different days, with no especially strong wind on either). In a suburban test drive of the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, the highest trip computer average I could achieve was 38 mpg. Quite good for a compact crossover, and nearly even with the best suburban average I observed in the Terrain diesel. Compared to a Terrain with the standard gas engine, the diesel rates four mpg high in the city and ten mpg higher on the highway. Compared to the Terrain with its base gasoline engine, the Jeep Compass rates lower in the city (22 vs. 24 mpg) but higher on the highway (30 vs. 28 mpg), so gas-to-gas they're about even. see full GMC Terrain review
GMC Terrain Real Gas Mileage: Cons
YearComment
2010 On a positive note, the larger V6 earns the same EPA fuel economy ratings as the old one. On a less positive note, it also earns the same fuel economy ratings as the much larger, 4,850-pound Acadia: 16 city, 23 highway. In suburban driving the trip computer reported high teens to low twenties, a few mpg below lighter, more compact competitors. The four-cylinder gets 22/32 with FWD, 20/29 with AWD, but many owners have failed to approach these numbers in the real world. see full GMC Terrain review

2012 4dr SUV 182-horsepower 2.4L I4
6-speed shiftable automatic AWD
Although I have never seen this truck get the estimated fuel economy it boasts about in advertising, considering the shear mass of it and it's breadbox front end, with the I4 the fuel economy is very good considering it is a heavy little beast with AWD. I can average 700 kms. out of a tank of fuel no problem and on longer jaunts have seen it break 800 kms. If you are one of those people who complain about fuel consumption in this truck- you should have bought a Prius... because for what it is, it is exceptional on fuel. Try a different brand of fuel for a while, some brands have more additives and burn quicker. see full GMC Terrain review

2015 4dr SUV 301-horsepower 3.6L V6
6-speed shiftable automatic AWD
Fuel economy, for a vehicle over 4,000lbs, and a 300hp V6 engine, is going to be low. But at between 15-18mpg, for suburban driving, it seems a bit low. I wanted to the V6 so it would not struggle, and I did that knowing the MPG's were not great, but I hoped it would be better on the highway. What I found most disappointing, was that with the V6, you don't get an "economy" switch. The 4 cylinder version does, but not the V6. Why does this matter? Because with a V6, with much more power than a 4 cylinder, using economy mode would not feel bad. On the Terrain, with the 4 cylinder you are starting with less, so taking away from less isn't alwyas good. But taking away from the V6, would not be as impacting. see full GMC Terrain review

TrueDelta Reviews the Real Gas Mileage of the Chevrolet Tahoe / Suburban

Chevrolet Tahoe / Suburban Real Gas Mileage: Pros
YearComment
2015 You didn't expect to see fuel economy among the reasons to buy a Tahoe, did you? Of course, fuel economy remains well below that for most smaller, lighter vehicles. But General Motors has substantially improved the SUV's efficiency by adding variable valve timing, direct injection (fuel is injected under high pressure directly into the cylinder, rather than into the manifold), and cylinder deactivation to the 5.3-liter V8. EPA ratings improved from 15 city, 21 highway to 16/23 with 2WD and 16/22 with 4WD. I observed averages as high as 21 in the suburbs and 26 on the highway, quite impressive for an 80-inch-wide, 74-inch-tall, three-ton vehicle. Transitions between V4 and V8 operation are not perceptible, with the engine usually in the former mode when not accelerating, even at highway speeds. Ford took a different approach to improving fuel economy, replacing its 5.4-liter V8 with a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6. The resulting EPA ratings of 15 mpg city and 20 mpg highway are better than before, but aren't as good as the Tahoe's. My trip computer averages were similarly two to three mpg shy of those observed in the Tahoe. see full Chevrolet Tahoe / Suburban review
