Rear bumper is falling off. Driver door won't stay open on slight decline (car is leaning into gutter pan). Pushed on door and now it creaks and the window jams. I have the infamous P420 error code. There are so many possible causes that it is hard to know where to start. Ever since the OEM muffler had been replaced with an aftermarket "tip" and cheap muffler, nothing but muffler leaks. Front passenger window control has loosened and "caved in" falling into the door. I conjectured that maybe a thief broke it if trying to unlock the car through a crack in the window. This is a nuisance. After light flurries, I woke early and off to work. It was below freezing and some water may have gotten into the mirror assembly. So...my passenger side view mirror popped and left a perfect clean crack straight down the middle of it !??

Loud intolerable noise coming from transmission & clutch assembly. Had manual transmission overhauled, new main bearings installed. Had clutch, pressure plate, and throw out bearing replaced. Airbag warning light constantly on, also a noise when the steering wheel was turned. The spiral cable clock spring assembly located below the steering wheel had a completely broken off ribbon cable. I replaced the spiral cable clock spring myself. This replacement also required the use of a steering wheel puller. Toyota wanted over $235.00 for this piece of plastic part. Found it on eBay brand new shipped for $13.00. I also had to buy a wheel puller from Harbor Freight for $14.00 to pull steering wheel out.

The windshield was cracked when I bought this car, so I had it replaced. The broken windshield significantly depressed the price of the car, which was nice... Their replies as to why they had not fixed the windshield were a little cagey... After buying the car, I learned that cracked windshields are a repeat problem in some Scion Xb's of this era. In retrospect I figured the owner must have had enough of the problem, and didn't want to fix yet another windshield. So far my windshield has held for five months... Crossing my fingers!

OBD II device reported #3 cylinder misfire. Limped home 30 miles in well-below-zero temps. First, replaced all spark plugs (nearly 60,000 mile on them, burned to nubs) with NGK (6341) BKR5EIX Iridium IX units ($6.98 ea, shipped - from Amazon Prime). Though performance improved, #3 was still misfiriing. Swapped 3/4 ignition coils to confirm fault, then acquired four OEM Denso 6731306 Ignition Coils (also, from Amazon Prime, @ $58.78 each, shipped - as opposed to $125~$145 from dealer). Installed #3 only, holding others in reserve for the Scion xB or my daughter's 2004 Toyota Echo RS 5-door hatchback (Canadian), which shares the identical driveline. Note: the female ignition coil connectors on the wiring harness are notorious for failure, despite the greatest exercise of caution when removing. Dealer has no listing for individual replacements, offering only an $800~$1,000 complete engine wiring harness as a solution. A modicum of research led to the discovery that they share the identical part with the Toyota Lexus Ignition Coil Connector Plug (#90980-11885), which I acquired new (set of four) on eBay for $11.99. shipped. Haven't installed as yet, since my crossed zip-tie temporary fix has yet to fail...
