TrueDelta Reviews the Real Gas Mileage of the Chevrolet Cruze

Chevrolet Cruze Real Gas Mileage: Pros
YearComment
2016 Weight is the enemy of fuel economy. Partly be reducing the Cruze's curb weight by about 250 pounds, from among the heaviest in the class to among the lightest, Chevrolet improved its EPA ratings from 26 mpg city, 38 mpg highway to 30/42 (30/40 in the tested top-of-the-line trim). The Honda Civic does a little better, 31/42, and the Mazda3 scores nearly as well, 30/41. But all three are close enough to consider them the segment's fuel economy leaders. The Ford Focus scores as high as 30/42, but only when equipped with a turbocharged three-cylinder engine and a manual transmission. For 2017 Chevrolet will offer a new 1.6-liter diesel that should deliver outstanding fuel economy. And if you want to avoid fossil fuels entirely, they already offer the related second-generation Volt, which can travel about 50 miles on electricity before a gasoline-powered backup engine kicks on. see full Chevrolet Cruze review

2014 4dr Sedan turbocharged 138hp 1.4L I4
6-speed manual FWD
Car is great for fuel economy if you keep your foot out of it. People with any clue how to drive rationally can achieve 42 mpg with little effort in rural highway and highway driving. Most people don?t realize going 10 mph over the speed limit really doesn?t save you any time on a 10 mile trip. Keep your pedal off the metal and the green in your wallet. Engine braking in the manuals is another big gain. Dfco saves a lot of gas. Rather than coasting down to your stop sign and burning your brakes up downshift as you slow and dont burn any fuel Other than a little blip between shifts. You will more than double your brake life if you don?t run the rabbit at every stoplight. see full Chevrolet Cruze review

Ford Expedition Real Gas Mileage: Cons
YearBody/PowertrainComment
2014 0 Seriously, what a pig. Not towing - mostly highway (over 400 miles worth) but some city driving as well - in 600 miles, we averaged 13.9 MPG. The car's computer appears reasonably accurate (as a rental, I do not know if it was really full when picked up but the second tank MPG was within 0.5 MPG of my calculation based on mileage). Yes, there were generally 6 passengers (4 adults, 2 kids) and the AC blowing (front and rear) to combate the Texas heat, but I was light with the thottle and it was quite flat. I am well aware no one will buy one of these based on gas mileage but this performance is just abysmal. Hopefully the next generation will improve. see full Ford Expedition review

It weights 3 tons, so fuel economy is not going to be great, but 13-14mpg in town and near 20mpg on the high way is achievable. see full Ford Expedition review

The 5.4 L engine gulps fuel. Usually get 14 around town and best of 18 mph on highway if easy on the throttle. Probably all that can be expected of such a heavy vehicle with high wind resistance. see full Ford Expedition review
