TrueDelta Reviews the Seat Room and Comfort of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Seat Room and Comfort: Pros
YearComment
2013 You can buy a BMW X5 or Porsche Cayenne with tame front seats, but not the Grand Cherokee SRT8. In the Jeep, SRT's signature buckets are standard. Large, firm bolsters provide excellent lateral support even to those of us with slender builds. Yet they're also comfortable, with enough padding to avoid park bench references. The four-way adjustable lumbar didn't do much for my back, but your experience may vary. Moving to the back seat, the Grand Cherokee's growth adds a couple of badly needed inches to legroom. With this improvement the Grand Cherokee only matches other similarly sized SUVs, so it's not a reason to buy. But rear seat legroom is no longer a reason not to buy, so it bears mentioning. see full Jeep Grand Cherokee review

The cabin is a very serene place to be, aided by the comfortable front seats. With the leather seat option, both front seats and two rear seats came with seat heaters. Also, both front seats are power adjustable, including height and lumbar. The lumbar support is great for long trips, allowing you to change wear the seat contacts your back for less overall fatigue. see full Jeep Grand Cherokee review

TrueDelta Reviews the Powertrain of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Powertrain: Pros
YearComment
2014 Concerned about the ability of a 240-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel engine to motivate a 5,275-pound SUV? You needn't be. As with the latest diesels of similar size and power from VW and Mercedes, there's a touch of lag when you initially depress the throttle, after which the engine (initially developed for European-market Cadillacs) pulls and pulls. Credit the combination of 420 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm (a touch more than the VW/Audi TDI) and an also-new-for-2014 eight-speed automatic transmission. This transmission, the same unit used in many luxury cars, has an ideal gear ratio for just about any situation, and is quite good at automatically selecting this ratio quickly and smoothly. Highway passing with the diesel isn't quite as quick as with a gas V6 engine. And if you're seeking an ultra-quick Jeep, then the 470-horsepower SRT (now also paired with the eight-speed automatic) is the one to get. But in typical around-town driving the diesel pulls like a gas V8. While idling and at low speeds, the Jeep's diesel engine (also available in the Ram pickup) isn't as quiet as that in the Touareg (which leads the industry, including the torquier diesels from Mercedes, in this regard). But hardly anyone is likely to find its mild clatter objectionable. If anything, it's an interesting break from the norm. Pretend you're driving a big rig! But I didn't lead with "powertrain performance" based on the merits of the engine and transmission, as proficient as they are. Rather, the tested Grand Cherokee was fitted with the full array of available off-roading hardware, including a height-adjustable air suspension (capabling of providing an extra four inches of ground clearance at low speeds, for a total of nearly a foot), limited-slip rear differential (capable of separately locking each rear axle), five-mode traction control, crawl control, and skid plates. I wasn't able to evalute this industry-leading system off the road, but have no doubt as to its capabilities. Among SUVs somewhat close in size and price, only the $62,000 Land Rover LR4 packs a similar arsenal. With the towing package (included in the off-road package), the Grand Cherokee diesel is rated to tow 7,200 lbs. (Add 200 with rear-wheel-drive.) The Touareg and LR4 are rated to tow another quarter-ton. see full Jeep Grand Cherokee review

2014 4dr SUV 470-horsepower 6.4L V8
8-speed shiftable automatic AWD
The 2014 Jeep SRT is an animal. With the new "LAUNCH" system, you can set the truck to propel itself at drag strip speeds with a few simple button presses. Due to the AWD system literally clawing for traction, a good "launch" of the Jeep 2014 will give you a 0-60 speed of 3.9 seconds. A weaker launch still gives you times well under 5 seconds. Step #1 - come to a stop on flat terrain. Step #2 - turn the drivetrain dial to "TRACK" Step #3 - press "LAUNCH" and the yellow light lights up. Step #4 - step on brake and then step on throttle. Step #5 - release brake. Step #6 - scream in joy as you rocket off!!! It's very simple...even simpler than launch control systems on cars like the Nissan GT-R. The 8-speed gives the Jeep's 6.4-Liter HEMI as many gears as it needs to properly adapt to just about any driving situation. The old 5-speed needed to be driven in "SPORT MODE" to make the truck feel "fast". The 8-speed outperforms the 5 in just about every way. Unfortunately, as mentioned, MPG is still poor. On a 400 mile trip I managed just 17mpg. In city driving I see no higher than 11 MPG. Stop lights and traffic take a high toll on MPG and all of the HEMI engines lack a start/stop feature. What's worse is that the SRT vehicles DEMAND that you drive them fast. The hypnotic *vroom* of the HEMI and the racing of sights past the windows create a constant sense of awe which might as well be measured in "smiles per gallon". You do not buy this vehicle to save fuel or money. see full Jeep Grand Cherokee review
