TrueDelta Reviews the Real Gas Mileage of the Lexus GS

Lexus GS Real Gas Mileage: Cons
YearComment
In casual suburban driving the trip computer reported between 22 and 23 mpg, splitting the difference between the EPA ratings of 19 city and 26 highway. When I made the engine sing mpg dropped into the high teens. Slip into Eco and drive the GS like a Prius, and 25 is barely doable. Not bad for a 306-horsepower, two-ton, all-wheel-drive sedan. But the torquier Audi A6 3.0T and BMW 535i xDrive do a little better, especially on the highway. The Teuton's turbos help a little here, but most of the blame/credit goes to their respective transmissions. If and when Lexus fits the GS AWD with the eight-speed automatic already offered in the RWD car, it'll likely catch up. see full Lexus GS review

Lexus GS Real Gas Mileage: Pros
YearBody/PowertrainComment
2009 4dr Sedan 303-horsepower 3.5L V6
6-speed shiftable automatic RWD
I have been averaging 26 MPG (indicated) in mixed suburban and highway driving, which I think is pretty good. see full Lexus GS review
2008 4dr Sedan 292-horsepower 3.5L V6 Hybrid
6-speed shiftable CVT RWD
For 340 hp and a 0-60 of 5.2 seconds, I consider an average of 24 in the city and 33 on the highway to be incredible. If you really feather the gas and stick to 65 on the highway you can get around 36-38 mpg. see full Lexus GS review
2007 4dr Sedan 292-horsepower 3.5L V6 Hybrid
6-speed shiftable CVT RWD
Low consumption in city and stop and go traffic Significant fuel savings in typical German highway driving - plenty of acceleration to and braking from high speeds. The hybrid drivetrain minimises the cost of this compared to conventional petrol power see full Lexus GS review

Thus far, I have averaged 23 and 26 mpg, both times have had roughly a 70 mile highway trip out of 200 miles. Overall, I find this to be acceptable. see full Pontiac Grand Prix review
2002 4dr Sedan 200-horsepower 3.8L V6

HORRIBLE. 12-16mpg combined with both city and driving. see full Pontiac Grand Prix review

BEFORE the switch to ethanol-mixed fuel, my supercharged V6 averaged 22mpg, getting 19 city and a staggering 34 highway. If you do long highway miles and want more comfort than any econo-box can offer, this is the car for you! see full Pontiac Grand Prix review

2006 4dr Sedan 303-horsepower 5.3L V8
4-speed shiftable automatic FWD
Great V8 exhaust note and instant acceleration comes at the cost of about 19 mpg in combined driving, versus 25 with my new car. That is a 30% increase. (the new car is 600 pounds lighter though...) see full Pontiac Grand Prix review
2005 4dr Sedan 303-horsepower 5.3L V8

17-19 mpg in the city. 25 If I drive on the intersate. 30 is possible at 60mph. Most of my driving is in the city. The beautiful v8 makes it impossible to stay out of the gas, but it can run on REG fuel. see full Pontiac Grand Prix review
