After attempting to start the vehicle, the vehicle would not enter "ready to drive" mode. Flashed multiple warning errors: "Malfunction See Owner's Manual", "Push brake and power switch to drive", "Warning Service EV System Power Reduced", and "Warning Service EV System". After multiple cycles of turning the vehicle on and off, it eventually allowed me to enter "Ready to Drive" mode. Dropped off the vehicle at Nissan dealer on 7/19/2019 for repair Dealer stated: After running all of our electrical test and doing the diagnoses we were able to find out that our issues were stemming from your 12 volt battery. The vehicle was reading it as a dead cell and running off the main battery only. After replacing the battery all the codes went away test drove and everything is finally back to normal. We are charging your vehicle now and will do another electrical test to be safe." While driving on 7/20/2019, I noticed a bit of water on the floormat. After a 35 minute drive, the puddle had grown to be a substantial amount of water. I suspected that the condensation drain line from the air conditioner was not properly connected. I had just installed rubber floormats the night before, so it's likely this issue has been present from the start but simply wasn't noticed because the carpet was absorbing the water and it wasn't obvious. I called dealer, then dropped off the vehicle. They confirmed that the tubing for the air conditioner drain was not properly connected. Sounds like a simple fix, and issue appears to be resolved. |

The SiriusXM tuner would freeze and stutter, like a skipping CD, but faster. Usually the radio buttons were still responsive, but I had to turn the radio off at least once to stop it. Not a huge deal, since we decided to not renew the subscription. However, the "head unit" does a lot of functions, including navigation, radio, etc. I want everything to work for peace of mind and for future resale. The dealer replaced the unit on the THIRD visit. This felt like a waste of time. On the first visit they said they couldn't replicate the problem. I asked the tech to come out to the car with me at the end of the visit and the fault happened. On the second visit they ran diagnostics and couldn't find anything wrong, but said they would replace it anyway. The tech remembered the problem, thankfully. On the third visit they had failed to record my appointment, but the unit they had ordered was in stock. So they said they'd do it that day -- and that programming it required ~3 hours. After stressing that I needed the car by 5:00 in order to pick up my kids who are in car seats, I took the loaner. I called back at 4:00 and they said it wouldn't be ready that day. So I had to scramble to find car seats to get my kids, then go pick up my car the next day. Bottom line: The main frustration was with how the dealer handled the repair. This is a big variable with a new-car purchase, since the time and hassle far outstripped the value of the SXM tuner. (Though having all functions working is important to me for resale.)

Clicking sound heard during acceleration. Dealer performed a TSB that involves lubricating the splines going through the wheel bearing assembly. Problem solved. This problem affects a huge number of Nissans (years and models).
Aug 2019 17341 mi |
The car made a popping/clunking sound when reversing out of the driveway in the morning, but the sound was not observed otherwise. The sound started within a few months of buying the car new, but has been difficult to replicate. I left the car overnight for diagnosis. They couldn't replicate. Driver's door handle was broken when picking up from last trip to the dealer, requiring an additional trip. It was still usable, but the outer part of the handle had separated from the part one pulls on. Part replaced. Driver window started making a LOT of noise during operation, but continued to work, just more slowly. The problem appeared after picking up the car from the last dealer visit, making this the THIRD trip in a month. The part was replaced and resolved the problem.
Mar 2020 21907 mi |
Another trip to try to resolve the clunking when leaving the driveway in the morning. Was able to replicate the problem TWICE with the service manager in the car with me. They claimed to have tightened suspension bolts and lubricated the brakes. No parts replaced. Problem not solved.
Apr 2020 22876 mi |
Another attempt to solve the clunking/popping noise when leaving the driveway. This time they consulted with Nissan USA and found that some of the front subframe bolts were loose. (I was initially freaked out by this, but the bolts have locking nuts, making it nearly impossible for them to fall out.) They also aligned the wheels. Problem still NOT solved.
Aug 2020 24760 mi |
Final trip to the dealer under warranty for the pop/clunk issue when leaving the driveway. All told, there were 6 trips to the dealer where this was listed as a problem. They replaced the passenger strut mount and bearing. The problem went away for a few months, but resurfaced in Fall 2020.
Sep 2020 25733 mi |
Noticed that one of the nuts holding the rear spoiler (factory part at top of hatch) had fallen off when the hatch was open. Reinstalled with threadlocker. A few others were loose, so did the same with all nuts.
Aug 2021 29462 mi US $162 |
Finally fixed the pop/clunk noise from the front suspension. What started a few months after getting the car new was resolved FOUR YEARS later by finding and performing TSB 14-088 myself. The dealer we purchased the car from replaced the passenger strut mount and bearing one year prior, but the problem is that the top of the coil spring is not finished well. That distorts the strut bearing, which is all plastic, and the popping sound results. The TSB involves installing rubber spacers between the spring and bearing to prevent the "hot spot" on the bearing. I also installed new KYB strut mounts at the same time. I had also purchased new KYB strut bearings, but they appeared to be inferior to the factory parts (which are marginal at best). So I reused the original bearing on the left and the Nissan part on the right that the dealer had installed in Aug 2020. The whole saga is detailed in this thread https://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?t=31105 |

Ok, it's outside the 24,000 mile limit. But the 12v battery died, rendering a fully electric car incapable of motion. That's pretty nuts for a 3-model-year old vehicle. There are many reports of the early death of these batteries.

12v lead acid battery died after 3 years of service, which is the longest a 12v battery has ever lasted in the thing. I think I'm on 12v battery number 6 or something crazy like that. Follow up to the previously reported clicking noise. Parts were ordered, and have been installed. Noise is mostly gone (I can hear it, but it's much quieter). Mostly concerned this problem will come back.
May 2015 25000 mi |
Clicking noise, addressed during a previous dealer visit, returned. This time, they've come to the conclusion that the reduction gear is the source of the noise, and will have to be replaced. Part has been ordered. When driving over a pothole or bump in the road, regen braking becomes disabled (so only mechanical brakes are working), which can be quiet dangerous. Dealer hasn't been able to duplicate this, so I'll be taking them for a test drive. Seat heaters and steering wheel heater shuts down after reaching proper temperature. Once this happens, you can't use it again for another 5-10 minutes, even in -20F weather. Just like last time, dealer told me it's working as designed.
Aug 2015 28700 mi |
Part finally arrived after waiting for close to a month. Reduction gear was replaced, but noise didn't go away, so the tech and Nissan decided to replace the motor, which I'm now waiting for (back-ordered as well).

B1018 Code - Passenger Seat sensor failure which is a multi thousand dollar repair. The part itself is a weight sensor but with it out the car disables airbags. have to buy a new seat, all the controllers/motors/sensors as a package and have them installed by a dealer. Can't put the part in yourself because it takes a dealer tool to set the codes for the part to match and turn the airbags back on.
