Why Not the 2003 Toyota Matrix?

Ride smoothness

Unbearably bumpy when new (noisy too). I took it back, and they installed some parts that had *not* been put on at the factory (!). It was a bit better after that, but always jiggly unless the road was brand new.

Quietness

Noisy, buzzy engine and close gear ratios, so it was always turning 3000 rpm plus, even at moderate speeds. At higher revs, it would eat its serpentine belt (the only one on the engine) and then that would squeak. Patented GM dash rattle.

Reliability & durability

see all of the above comments - 5 serpentine belts in 53,000 km.

Materials & workmanship

it was sloppily put together at the factory and was never a pleasant car to be in. Chrome bits on the dash were blinding.
