Introduction

Overall, I knew what I was buying: an American muscle car. The car is exactly what I was expecting. It's roomy, powerful, fun, and engaging. Also, it's noisy and has some design quirks. Personally, the quirkiness gives it character to me, but be forewarned before you buy it.

Why the 2013 Ford Mustang?

Powertrain performance

This car has loads of power and is an absolute blast to drive.

Front seat room

Without the sunroof, there is adequate headroom, legroom, and hiproom for taller drivers (6'6"+). The seats are supportive and comfortable for longer drives. This car makes a competent "daily driver" in fair weather.

Audio & nav systems

The Shaker audio system is fantastic. The media choices are top-notch, including full bluetooth support with Android phones.

Handling

The car grips the road in fair weather, which instills a lot of confidence in driving.

Dealer practices

The Ford dealers in my area (St. Louis, Missouri) were courteous, helpful, and no-games. Pricing was competetive at four different dealerships (Suntrup, Pundmann, Marshall, and Lou Fusz). Ultimately, Lou Fusz provided the best experience, but Suntrup had the best price.

Why Not the 2013 Ford Mustang?

Materials & workmanship

Rattle rattle rattle rattle rattle...noises come from everywhere. I'm writing them all down and will make one trip to the dealer. So far, the seatbelt anchor appears to be rattling, the driver side window, the seat when the lumbar (squeak, squeak) is at its fullest, and also when it's at its lowest setting (squeak, rattle, squeak). It sounds like a 1980s VW.

Quietness

Road noise galore: wind, tire hum, and interior rattles. Don't buy this car if you like a quiet commute.

Fuel economy

19.6 MPG under tame driving (read: shifting at 2200rpms), 10.2 under agressive driving.

Controls and instruments

With the nav screen, the physical radio and climate control buttons are low, small, and worthless. If you're not comfortable with driving and operating a touch screen, skip the Sync Nav.
