I had a Versa as a rental for 4 days and was pleasantly surprised after being annoyed with my dealer who only had Versas. There was decent interior room, relatively comfortable, very good gas mileage and was overall pleasant to drive. However, the CVT had an annoying habit and I do not know what the competition at this price point is like.
Trip computer indicated 36 MPG in mixed urban and highway driving. Appears to be accurate based on how much gas I put in it at the end of the rental period. The urban driving also had idling time so was not fuel economy friendly.
I was pleasantly surprised at the seating position and ability to see out of the Versa. The height adjustment had a good range and after I found the seatback adjustment (it was not easily located behind the seat belt), I had a good driving position even for an hour long drive.
I was expecting zero room in the back, but I sat in the backseat even with the drivers seat adjusted far back (I'm 5'11" but long legs and tend to adjust seats to the back end of their travel), I had reasonable legroom for a very compact car. The seat covering material was pleasant as well.
The trip computer was clear and concise - nice touch on a basic vehicle, and not the weird menu systems that Nissan seems to favor. The HVAC controls were simple and easy to manipulate.
The steering is reasonably connected to the road, although isolated, and the car vaguely points in the direction you steer it. Lots of body roll.
The engine was plenty adequate once you got it spun up. However, the CVT had an annoying habit when stopped to nearly stall the engine and appear to be engaging and disengaging the engine, causing the car to lurch against the brakes frequently. It is almost as if the transmission is programmed for start-stop but the engine never stopped running.
Definitely worthwhile a test drive and to be looked at against its competition.
I totally agree, I have 2 versa's one is a 2012 versa sv with the cvt transmission
Yes I notice it sometimes jerks when stopping at lights. and is annoying with
the revs.
my other versa is a 2014 note with 5 speed manual transmission. I find it much
better than the cvt and easy to drive. both cars get 27 city / 35 highway.
the cvt gets a little better 29 city / 38 highway
