Reviewed: 2005 Toyota Matrix

4dr Hatch 130-horsepower 1.8L I4 4-speed automatic FWD

Why the 2005 Toyota Matrix?

Exterior styling

nice semi aggressive wagon look, kind of sporty

Reliability & durability

so far no real mechanical issues. There was a hard start issue which Toyota/dealership eventually admitted and corrected after many attempts and denial that this problem existed

Fuel economy

Front WD w/ 4sp auto, great highway mileage, but not near the advertised ratings

Cargo capacity

I have fit the following in the car, 52inch Bravia still in the box, 4 panels of a single car garage door, love seat, 40 bags of topsoil, cases and cases of Coke

Brand reputation & image

The movie was very exciting and full of action

Why Not the 2005 Toyota Matrix?

Ride smoothness

Very harsh/stiff ride and sits too high

Quietness

This car has a lot of road noise, wind noise, rattles, buzzes, clunks and rattles even when brand new. Toyota says it is normal.

Fuel economy

Not even close to what is advertised

Powertrain performance

Jerky automatic tranny, very buzzy engine, no passing power, not too peppy.

Dealer practices

Do not tell about TSB even though I ask about it. Deny there is a known issue, lie to your face. There was a hard start issue which Toyota/dealership eventually admitted and corrected after many attempts and denial that this problem existed. Avoid Dealr
