2005 Volvo S60 Pros and Cons at TrueDelta: Owner Pros and Cons by snowcoast

Reliability & durability
Have owned for 4.5 years. Wife and I purchased based on experiences of 2 family members who had good experiences. We have been stranded once (in driveway) due to faulty shift lock mechanism, otherwise have put 151,000 essentially pain-free KM on this.
Handling
Handles better than you initially expect. This is a car you get used to. Feels heavy at first, and can feel sluggish at low speeds - however you quickly learn these cars are as thrilling to drive at upper-end speeds as anything in the segment.
Materials & workmanship
Apart from poorly designed front-end our S60 2.5T has been bulletproof. All major items appear to be built to last. Of better quality than the Lexus RX I used to own - which I feel is high praise.
Rear seat room & comfort
Minimal rear seat leg room. Our kids are 9 & 8 - we are having to look for a replacement car as they are getting too big for this one. To offset the front seats are as comfortable as I have experienced in a car. Now considering an S80 or XC70.
Tires
In my experience brakes and tires wear prematurally as compared to other vehicles I have owned. Car is hypermiled - not driven like an F1 car. At best I seem to get 30-40 km out of tires rated for 80 km. Notice brakes becoming less effective after 25km.
Insurance cost
Insurance cost is nearly double what we pay on our 6 year newer Venza. Cost of ownership is consistent with other European manufacturers.
