Cadillac ATS Real Gas Mileage: Cons

	On paper, the ATS's engines meet or exceed competitors. Even the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine peaks at over 200 horsepower, while the 2.0-liter turbo kicks out 272 and the 3.6-liter V6 321. I found the base engine more satisfactory than most reviewers have. But the other two don't feel as strong as their power ratings suggest they ought to, and could also sound and feel more sophisticated and thrilling. They're all fairly good engines, but none of them is a great engine. Fuel economy falls short of the BMW. The 2.0T engine is EPA-rated 19 city, 30 highway with a manual transmission, 21/31 with an automatic. Step up to the V6, and the numbers fall to 18/28. Deduct a couple of highway mpg with AWD. The BMW's ratings are much higher. The 328i's 2.0T engine is rated 22/34 with a manual transmission, 23/33 with a six-speed automatic. The 335i's six-cylinder engine when paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission somehow manages the same EPA rating as the 328i's four-cylinder. In the real world it doesn't fare as well, though. The V6 in the Infiniti in conjunction with a seven-speed automatic transmission is about even with that in the Cadillac, 19/27. 2015	The SE's grippier tires knock the Toyota Camry Hybrid's EPA ratings down from 43/39 to 40/38. The Ford Fusion Hybrid tests better, 44/41, while the Honda Accord Hybrid tests far better, 50/45. Then there's the real world, where, according to the cars' trip computers, my suburban average was in the low 40s in all three (the Lincoln MKZ standing in for the Fusion) and topped 50 on trips with no unexpected stops (i.e. any braking could be gradual enough to rely almost entirely on energy regeneration rather than the friction brakes). The Camry Hybrid acheived the best reported mpg on my standard school-to-home run--an astounding 70.6--but it started this particular trip with a eight bars in the battery pack (fully charged) and ended it with just two. You can only drive two, maybe three miles on electricity, but when the route totals 7.5 miles even a couple with the gas engine off can generously pad the average. On a 70-mph highway the Camry's trip computer reported averages in the low 40s. I wasn't able to test the Honda on the highway. The Lincoln MKZ hybrid's reported somewhat better numbers than the Camry's, but there's not a large percentage difference between 43.7 and 47.4. Any number of factors besides the cars themselves (trip computer accuracy, driving speed, wind conditions) could account for this difference. Frankly, I'm mightly impressed by any midsize sedan that can consistently average over 40 mpg, as these all can with light-footed acceleration and (especially) braking. see full Toyota Camry review

The latest response from the dealer is the milage will improve after I have driven 12,000 miles . That is the fourth milestone i have been told to reach for better fuel economy. The dealer refused to put the car in the shop to check out this problem. Last week i drove 286 miles to Louisville, KY and back with 246 miles on interstate highways at 65 mph. I drove with the Eco light lite with slow acceleration. I have spoken with other 2012 owners and they report the same milage. The conclusion I have reached on the average milage listed on this web site is by people who do know how to accurately figure fuel milage. see full Toyota Camry review

On the highway, it's particularly sensitive to speed, as the car is not very aerodynamic. I got as bad as 16 l/100 Km in the city, and as low as 8.8 l/100 Km on long trips.
