TrueDelta Reviews the Real Gas Mileage of the Chevrolet SS

Chevrolet SS Real Gas Mileage: Cons
YearComment
My mention of a $1,300 gas guzzler tax foreshadowed this "why not." If you want a fuel-efficient car, you probably don't want a big, V8-powered sedan. But even compared to the Dodge Charger R/T the SS is a guzzler. This is partly because the very small number sold doesn't justify an upgrade to GM's latest engine and transmission technology, which includes variable valve timing, cylinder deactivation, and eight-speed automatic transmissions. These technologies enable the Charger R/T to earn EPA ratings of 16 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, while the SS can only manage 14/21 with a six-speed automatic or 15/21 with a six-speed manual (which skips from first to fourth under light throttle). In my real-world driving, the trip computer usually reported an average around 16 or 17 in the suburbs (20 if I drove with a very light foot) and MAYBE 24 on the highway. The trip computer in the Dodge reported averages that were usually higher by a couple MPG, but keep its engine in V4 mode (i.e. no lights to stop for) and the average can reach 30. see full Chevrolet SS review

Wow, really, really bad. All the reviews you may have read about the fuel economy are dead on. You can optimistically get 24 on the freeway and low teens city. Then again you are NOT buying this car for fuel economy. see full Chevrolet SS review

On a recent trip from Charlottetown, PE, Canada to Halifax, NS my car averaged 35 miles per US gallon, or over 730km per tank of fuel. As a Merchandiser, my job requires a lot of city Driving and I average 600km per tank of gas see full Mazda Protege review
2003 4dr Sedan turbocharged 170hp 2.0L I4

A turbo sedan that got me 35mpg all-highway, and gets 28+ in mixed driving. see full Mazda Protege review
2003 4dr Sedan 130-horsepower 2.0L I4

Great fuel economy my first tank was 28mpg, my second one with my cold air intake installed got it over 30! see full Mazda Protege review
2003 4dr Wagon 130-horsepower 2.0L I4

The car does get excellent fuel economy- IF you can keep your foot out of it. I rarely succeed in that endeavor- the car is just too much fun to drive, the embodiment of "driving a slow car, fast." see full Mazda Protege review
2003 4dr Sedan 130-horsepower 2.0L I4

Great fuel efficiency but still retains a lot of pep and zip. see full Mazda Protege review

Not too bad, the roof rack hurts it a bit. gets a solid 22-25 driving 70-75 on highway. Does get 30mpg at 60 mph, but that speed will get you killed on California interstates. see full Mazda Protege review

Suburban fuel economy is acceptable, at nearly 30 mpg. But on the highway, with the engine spinning well over 3,000 rpm, fuel economy also struggles to crack 30. Many much larger, much more powerful cars achieve better highway fuel economy. Some owners have fitted the fifth gear from the related transmission in the Mazda6 to get more of an overdrive. see full Mazda Protege review
