24500 mi Auto stop/start not working. Replaced battery and recalibrated ABS. From the repair order: Verified customer concern. Stop-start inop. Monitored auto stop-start status in IPC and upon coming to a complete stop message "Vehicle on due to vehicle charging" present. Tested battery and battery failed. Replaced battery and reset BMS. Retested and stop-start still inop. Same message present. Test drove vehicle so that vehicle could learn new BMS values. Retested again and stop-start still inop. Performed scan tool tests and found code U0100 fault. Diagnosed code to rule out the possibility that the fault was inhibiting the stop-start system from functioning. Found SSM 49157 for code U0100. Followed SSM 49157 producer and reprogrammed GSM to latest calibration and clear DTC. Test drove vehicle and monitored stop-start pids and found stop-start vehicle status changed and showed SS_INHIB_EC11 stop-start inhibited due to steep grade/hill. Also noticed that the message status changed in the IPC to the same "Vehicle on due to steep grade". Test drove vehicle and even on a flat surface this message appeared in the IPC in the event of a complete stop. Performed anti-lock brake system calibration on a flat surface and retested once again. Auto stop-start is operating normally at this time.

The process to change out the battery on this vehicle precludes an owner from doing it. Best case you do not break the windshield while doing it. it should be considered a repair because the entire Windshield wiper facia and wipers need to be removed as does the air filter box to clear the battery.

In the NY metro area that is not acceptable. The audio quality changes and I find myself listening to the quality of the audio and not the content. The dealer disabled AM HD for me.

24000 mi Dual Zone A/C Unit malfunctioned by turning itself on and high. Multiple electrical failures (power windows, locks, push button ignition, A/C, side view mirrors). They could not recreate any of the electrical issues I had upon inspection. An indicator came back saying there may potentially be an issue with the battery so they replaced it under warranty. They said in some cases a partial short could cause these issues however they weren't certain that was the case. I have not had any problems since I have got the car back.
33600 mi

US $719
I had noticed that the climate control in the car was not working correctly. After the vehicle engine was warmed up it would still blow out cold air, even when reading 75+ degrees. In order for warm temperature to come through the car it had to be manually turned to at least 77 degrees. Additionally the outside temp gauge on the My Ford Touch (MFT) display would consistently give VERY inaccurate readings. On a day where it was 40 degrees the display read anywhere from -6 to 77 degrees. I believe the two issues may had been interrelated. Upon Ford inspection the found the issue to be caused by a Ambient Air Temperature Sensor. The sensor itself was faulty and broker and needed to be replaced. After replacing the sensor the technicians found that whenever the harness it is connected to is moved the temperature readings become inaccurate. Upon additional inspection they found the pin connector for the sensor was broken and also needed to be replaced. Once replaced the Climate Control and Outside Air Temp readings appeared to be functioning correctly.

Direction lamp front driver side. I waited almost one hour. The attendant thought it was wrong, spoke with the mechanic that confirmed 40 minutes were charge for changing one bulb.
11320 mi Airbag and ABS module burnt
12700 mi Performed TSB for freezing up of the system, which didn't produce cold air from the A/C system.
18903 mi After 20 minutes, the dash vents would close. Fan works okay, I hear the air coming out, it's just not able to come out of anywhere I can feel. Turning the car off and on fixes the problem. The dealer tracked it down to SSM 45383 and reprogrammed the HVAC module. The repair seemed to work, but when I drove it the following day, it happened again. The day after I picked up the car, the problem happened again. All the vents closed up, the fan works perfectly, but no air comes out of any vent. I was close to the dealership, so I came right in. The manager, the writer and two techs saw the problem. I was hoping to get an answer that afternoon. The next day, I was told it would be ready on Monday, on Monday, I was told that they weren't able to fix it, and that they had a "call into the Ford hotline." I took it back because I couldn't afford to pay for a rental anymore. I called Ford corporate, they referred me to another Ford dealer about twenty minutes away. All the vents closed up, the fan works perfectly, but no air comes out of any vent. After calling Ford corporate, they told me that I had to go back to the original dealer. I left several messages until he finally called me back, and told me to bring the car in. Several days later, a part was replaced, but they declined to give me the repair ticket, saying they wanted to keep the repair order open in order to stop the factory warranty from expiring. A few warm days later, it seems to be working. The recirculation button still turns off and on from time to time, and in order to change the setting, I still have to push it twice. I didn't push it, I will ask them to look at it later.
37000 mi Bluetooth stopped working, just like my old Escape. In the past, I was able to pull the battery and reset the system, on the new Escape, the battery is buried under a plastic shroud by the windshield. The dealership reset the battery for me, Bluetooth is working. But, the clock now is frozen.

Car would not start symptoms of battery issue. Since I had x warranty towed for free. Initial report was bad battery. I felt there was no way battery was bad after 2 years. Told them it had to be something else. They checked and researched stuff... another battery test came back same - battery. Interstate battery was warranties through another shop. They supplied a battery, dealer installed for $15. Battery is hard to get at I felt it was worth that. Escape uses something called BCM - Battery Control Module - when battery was replaced 2 years ago this was not reset. I had car-truck at another dealer for gremlins after the battery was replaced and they knew battery was replaced but did not know to reset BCM. This most likely would not apply full charge to battery as computer thought battery was bad and caused battery to fail prematurely. No gremlins this time!

Corrosion in C210 connector causing all sorts of electrical problems. The first symptom was that the transmission would not shift out of Park. These Escapes have a mechanical bypass switch in the console, so you can bypass the shift lever interlock, start it, and then shift out of Park. Unfortunately the same cause also prevents the brake lights and the daytime running lights (drl) from working. This is because a computer (Smart Junction Box SJB) was not getting a signal that the brake pedal was depressed. The first suspicion was that the brake lamp switch on the brake pedal arm was faulty. Replacing the switch with a new one did not fix the problem. A wire from that switch goes through a connector, C210, and then to the computer SJB. Corrosion in C210 caused an outage in that circuit. Without a signal from the brake lamp switch, the SJB believes the brake has not been applied, and so will not tell the shift interlock solenoid to open. And it won't send the necessary commands to illuminate the brake lamps or the drl lights. C210 is a vital part of the Escape's wiring. It contains about 50 circuits. It doesn't "do" anything and acts as a place where a collection of circuits in various wiring harnesses converge and then go their various ways. Other circuits passing through C210 include wiring for the fuel system, and most seriously, the front impact sensors. Failure of the brake lights is bad enough. If corrosion in C210 can prevent the car's systems from getting notifications from the impact sensors, the air bags probably won't deploy when needed. So this is a serious safety problem. Should Ford do a recall? I'd say that depends on the frequency of this failure, which is related to the probable and common cause. These Escapes are notorious for multiple ways water can get into the interior from leaks in the rear hatch. I believe condensation from water entering the interior from the hatch, then evaporating and condensing throughout the interior, caused the corrosion in C210. All the metal surfaces with thin black paint under the seats and all other hidden surfaces in the interior, had surface rust when I bought the car when it was 4 years old and had 108,000km on it. I had to track down a multitude of such leaks before stopping all of them. I put a detailed post about this in the Escape Hybrid section of the escapecity discussion site.
