Coolant leaked into #2 cylinder due to Ford design fault. Only solution is engine replacement. There is a class action lawsuit against Ford for not correcting this defect on it's 1.5 and 2.0 litre turbocharged engines. During routine service grease and leakage noted from left front axle boot. Axle shaft and boot replaced. Cause was undetermined.

Check engine light came on, autozone said it was a purge valve that needed to be replaced. Took to mechanic, Kinneys Automotive in Hurst. They said they had to replace everything from the gas cap to the engine, cost 950.00 and took three days. The check engine light came on, I took it to Kwik Kar in Hurst, TX. They ran the code and said it was the purge valve. Said it might be gas, so they reset the code, I drove it for two weeks, check engine light came back on, error was the purge valve. they changed it for 99.00. also flushed out the gas area as there was an error code about it. the gas cap error light has been coming on and going off for over a year now. hopefully its all fixed now, and I will never go back to Kinneys Automotive.

Both the master cylinder and the hydraulic control unit went out and had to be replaced. Car was in the shop for nearly 17 days due to the difficulty in finding parts. My mechanic said he is hearing an increasing number reports of this issue with the ford escape
260435 mi

US $6160
at 260435 miles the transmission failed. Initial cause was a loose front left axel. This caused a transmission fluid leak which resulted in the transmission running out of fluid and overheating which effectively destroyed the transmission. cost to replace was 1958.00 in labor and 3796.00 in parts. Only reason this was done was because vehicle would have to be scrapped which would have negated past repairs. Plan now is to keep car as a 2nd vehicle intermediate shaft, transaxel oil cooler, transaxel assembly, left front constant velocity driveshaft also replaced.

Corrosion in C210 connector causing all sorts of electrical problems. The first symptom was that the transmission would not shift out of Park. These Escapes have a mechanical bypass switch in the console, so you can bypass the shift lever interlock, start it, and then shift out of Park. Unfortunately the same cause also prevents the brake lights and the daytime running lights (drl) from working. This is because a computer (Smart Junction Box SJB) was not getting a signal that the brake pedal was depressed. The first suspicion was that the brake lamp switch on the brake pedal arm was faulty. Replacing the switch with a new one did not fix the problem. A wire from that switch goes through a connector, C210, and then to the computer SJB. Corrosion in C210 caused an outage in that circuit. Without a signal from the brake lamp switch, the SJB believes the brake has not been applied, and so will not tell the shift interlock solenoid to open. And it won't send the necessary commands to illuminate the brake lamps or the drl lights. C210 is a vital part of the Escape's wiring. It contains about 50 circuits. It doesn't "do" anything and acts as a place where a collection of circuits in various wiring harnesses converge and then go their various ways. Other circuits passing through C210 include wiring for the fuel system, and most seriously, the front impact sensors. Failure of the brake lights is bad enough. If corrosion in C210 can prevent the car's systems from getting notifications from the impact sensors, the air bags probably won't deploy when needed. So this is a serious safety problem. Should Ford do a recall? I'd say that depends on the frequency of this failure, which is related to the probable and common cause. These Escapes are notorious for multiple ways water can get into the interior from leaks in the rear hatch. I believe condensation from water entering the interior from the hatch, then evaporating and condensing throughout the interior, caused the corrosion in C210. All the metal surfaces with thin black paint under the seats and all other hidden surfaces in the interior, had surface rust when I bought the car when it was 4 years old and had 108,000km on it. I had to track down a multitude of such leaks before stopping all of them. I put a detailed post about this in the Escape Hybrid section of the escapecity discussion site.

Replace O-rings on 4WD mechanism...AGAIN!  My transmission fluid was leaking & the tranny was sometimes slipping from 1st to 2nd gear. I believed the pan needed to be replaced, which was logical after the winter & driving in/out of my driveway as there is quite a difference between the road/driveway in the winter snow - it would be easy enough to bash the pan underneath. I took the vehicle to Mr. Transmission where the mechanic proceeded to add tranny fluid, which came GUSHING out the bottom of the vehicle as fast as he put it in. I thought this was rather odd as I'd only ever seen a small leak in my driveway and nothing like he showed me. $1600 and almost a week later, I picked up my vehicle and immediately noticed the same issues with transmission as when I'd taken the car there. The mechanic shrugged his shoulders & said he'd made a "special part" for the transmission & I just needed to drive the car around. To this day, I think he was full of it & charged me for some mystery repair I didn't need or really get. From what I understand, the vehicle had slippage issues (usually only on wet/snowy roads) because of the broken o-rings/censors and the tires were not functioning in an AWD capacity, causing it to feel like it was the transmission. As I recall, the slippage rarely (if ever) occurred on dry pavement. Once I got the o-rings repaired, I've had no issues with slippage whatsoever. So...was the transmission repair successful? I don't think there was ever an issue with the tranny, other than some transmission fluid leakage in my driveway. I haven't had this repair done yet, but the paint on both rear fenders has peeled off and the rust is starting to take hold. I have noticed many other Ford Escapes with the same flaking paint issue on the same rear fenders. Obviously this is not the owner's fault, but a definite flaw in how Ford paints it's vehicles. Also tie-rod ends

Same day I picked up car from tailpipe repair, I noticed a heavy grinding in the driver side front steering mechanism which was not there when I originally dropped off the car. It sounded like the wheel was grinding on the axle - terrible noise. I took the vehicle back to same repair shop & asked that it be fixed ASAP as I was driving out of town for a scheduled appointment in two days. The shop replaced only the wheel bearing on front left side of vehicle. Noisy muffler system. Took in for repair & told it was a tailpipe. Paid $400 for replacement/labor, but I still have a noisy muffler (which no one said a word about)!

Battery was good. I was leaving for Ireland in two days, so gave car to friend to repair while I was gone. He investigated and discovered the idiot who replaced the Alternator previous to when I owned the car, did not shrinktape a wire connection, and it corroded into two pieces, hence no charge to battery. Gave my buddy 100.00 bucks for his trouble, because I know how difficult it is to get to the Alternator!
