Introduction

We got this 1.5 yr old used car with 17K miles for less than half the sticker price and we have no regrets. Our target car at the time was a Nissan Sentra, but we couldn't turn down the deal.
rn
rnIt's been a great road car, has been completely reliable and as a hatchback has plenty of room to haul things around. This is our first American manufacturer car ever and I must say Ford is a winner in our book.

Why the 2007 Ford Focus?

Cargo capacity

I've always loved hatchbacks, so I knew the ZX5 was going to be a winner in this regard. There's plenty of room for everything we ever need to haul around.

Ride smoothness

The ride is relatively hard and stiff, compared to most American cars we've been in. Some may not like this, but we do. Tires have alot to do with this too, of course.

Fuel economy

We consistently get 30-33 mpg on the road which puts it at the bottom of the barely acceptable IMHO. Still, that's better than most we looked at cars of that age. It has a small, but peppy engine that gives us all the power we're interested in.

Front seat room

It was a pleasant surprise when we discovered how comfortable the front seats were for long road trips. They are contoured enough so I can lay the seat back, with a small pillow and take a nice long nap. This is probably highly subjective, but for us, the car seats have been just what we wanted.

Why Not the 2007 Ford Focus?

Color choices

It's not Ford's fault we got a black car, but that's not going to happen again. It looks great for the first ten minutes after it's washed, but shows dust and road dirt within minutes after that.

Fuel economy

30+ mpg really is not nearly good enough.

Materials & workmanship

The workmanship and interior design is not great. Little rattles are showing up and I don't think I should be trying to silence them with my own little car-hacks. How much more could it have cost, Ford, to do this better?

Conclusion

When we we look for our next car, we'll be checking out Ford hatchbacks again. I'm not sure when that might be, since the 2007 has been so reliable, it's going to be a long time before we look again.

For us the ZX5 was right on the mark.
