ESP failure alarm constantly coming up with related tyre pressure sensor inoperative. Suspension becomes harsh while failure showing. Steering angle sensor failure in this case. Could also have been brake light switch or a wheel speed sensor. Removed and replaced steering angle sensor with second hand unit. New Mercedes part unreasonably priced for what it is. I can now advise the the old unit was in fact serviceable. Stripped it down, cleaned it and retested it and it works just fine. Simple job but must be done carefully. Many video's online to follow.

The steering wheel position sensor was intermittently reporting an error and causing a stability control system error. Repair required removal of the steering wheel and air bag to enable replacement of the sensor. Subsequent inspection of the part reveled a hazy film had accumulated on the position disk which attenuated the light beam which needed to pass through. A simple cleaning would have solved the problem.
