2013 Volkswagen's hybrid approach is nothing like Toyota's, and not much like Honda's, either. There's no CVT transmission. And no Atkinson cycle engine where the intake valves remain open longer (good for efficiency, not good for power). Instead, the transmission is a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual much like that offered in VW's non-hybrids. The engine is a small, 1.4-liter four-cylinder--but with a turbocharger. Total output, 170 horsepower, far exceeds the Acura's 115. As in nearly all current hybrids except those from Toyota and Ford, the electric motor is sandwiched between the engine and transmission. Unlike in the Honda, the engine can be declutched from the electric motor, permitting the latter to propel the car all by itself. With no CVT, no Atkinson cycle, and a turbo, VW's recipe doesn't sound like the best one for fuel economy. But the Jetta Hybrid does quite well. Though far more powerful than the ILX Hybrid, the VW's EPA numbers are much better, 42 mpg city, 48 mpg highway vs. 39 and 38, respectively. What's more, with its engine overmatched ILX is likely to fall short of its EPA numbers for all but the most patient drivers. In my driving the Jetta Hybrid's trip computer reported an average of 46 in suburban driving and about 40 driving on a 70-mph highway (less on a hot day going in one direction, more on a cooler day when returning). On rural, 55-mph highways, the trip computer reported averages in the high 40s, verifying the EPA number. I've observed 50-plus mpg in a Toyota Prius. But the much quicker (we'll get to this) Jetta Hybrid has all of the other hybrids beat. The Jetta Hybrid does require premium gas. But so does the ILX Hybrid. What about the Jetta TDI diesel? The EPA estimates much worse fuel economy, 30 mpg city and 42 mpg highway. But in a recent test of a Beetle with the same engine I observed trip computer averages close to those of the Jetta Hybrid. It would be higher but it is a fun car and it is difficult to maintain discipline for an entire tank of fuel. 500 miles is a long way to drive conservative lol. My economy keeps rising as the engine breaks in which can be up to 60000 miles. 6-speed automated manual FWD		 Stellar vehicle all around. Fuel economy is amazing, have gotten as low as 4.9L/100km with 110 km/hr highway driving and one driver and one passenger. Loaded, it still comes under 5.5. (I am not a heavy footed driver but do cruise at posted highway speeds plus a bit. Comfortable all around. Three months and 12,000km into ownership and I like it more and more. I checked out a whole bunch of cars and wanted fuel economy so had looked at the hybrids then thought that this is a proven technology, drove one and was sold on it. 2016 The new Honda Civic earned EPA ratings among the best in the class with both engines: 31 mpg city, 41 mpg highway with the 2.0-liter engine and 31/42 with the 1.5-liter turbo. With the 2.0-liter I observed suburban averages as high as 43 mpg and a 70-mph highway average around 42. My average for the entire week, including cold starts and idling while taking photos, was 31.8 mpg. With a 2.0-liter engine, the 2017 Hyundai Elantra doesn't come within ten percent of the Honda's scores with a marginally competitive 28/37. Hyundai is adding an Eco variant with a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine. The Eco roughly ties the Civic with 32/40, but with only 128 horsepower it probably won't perform nearly as well. The Mazda3's fuel economy is more competitive: 30/41 with a 2.0-liter engine and 28/39 with a strong 2.5-liter. If you want a manual transmission, the Mazda can seem even better. First off, Honda and Hyundai currently offer a manual transmission only with their base trim levels and base engines, while Mazda offers a manual with both engines and all trim levels. MPG ratings for the Mazda3 with a manual are 29/41 with the 2.0 and 25/37 with the 2.5. With a manual the Honda's EPA ratings are 27/40 and the Hyundai's are 26/36. 6-speed manual FWD		 This one is odd. I travel down to Florida a lot, on a 300-400 mile trip I am between 35-40. Mixed driving I have never gone below 32.4. City driving I once saw it go down to 29.1. I am sure if I drive it like I stole it these figures would drop, but then few drive like this. I will say if you if you light up the four lights on the VTEC you will knock a couple of miles a gallon off your mileage instantly and it will take a while to get back. see full Honda Civic review
