Car was towed to vw dealer and repaired.
111000 mi Arrived at work and the car turned off, but the key would not turn to the release position so I could take the key out of the ignition. Luckily we were slow at work so I spent about 16 hours out of the 48 I worked taking apart the steering wheel/column to disassemble the ignition cylinder. At some point during the repair the steering wheel lock engaged and I could no longer turn the key at all. The immobilizer on the cylinder wouldn't release. In the end, I partially repaired it by removing the ignition cylinder and grinding down the wheel lock. I took the ignition off the rear of the cylinder and relocated to the steering column. I now have to start my car by inserting the key (still won't turn because I can't disassemble the immobilizer) and then manually turning the ignition under the steering column. A proper fix would be replacing the entire ignition cylinder but VW is buying the car back in January. Research during the repair indicates this is a common VW problem across most model lines/years that they refuse to address.

I insisted they check the wire which had been a problem prior (this dealer spliced a repair wire 1 year earlier).
